Loyola senior Rex Maurer took down the national high school record in the 500-yard freestyle with a 4:12.70 on Friday night after just barely missing the 200 free mark earlier in the session at the 2023 CIF-Southern Section (SS) Division I Championships in Riverside.
Former Santa Margarita standout Grant Shoults held the previous standard with a 4:12.87 that had stood for seven years since the same CIF-SS Division I Championship meet back in 2016. Maurer had actually been faster before with a 4:12.33 at December’s Winter Junior Championships.
In the 200 free, the Stanford commit was within a second of Aaron Shackell‘s national high school record (1:32.85) with a personal-best 1:33.54.
This is your LIVEBARN Race of the Week because Maurer set the new national high school record in the 500 free on the back half of a tough double while also coming off the flu, unshaved, and not fully rested. Expect the No. 2 recruit in SwimSwam’s rankings for the high school class of 2023 to be even faster at the CIF State Championships in Fresno on Saturday and potentially add another national high school standard to his collection.
