Razorback Aquatic Club’s Lexie D’Amico, 13 years old, threw down a lifetime best time of 1:01.81 in the 100 breast on night 3 of the Columbia Sectionals, taking the runner-up spot behind Marizel Van Jaarsveld.
D’Amico’s performance knocked 2.08 seconds off her previous best and marked the 4th-fastest time in the 100 breast this season among the 13-14 age group. D’Amico is also notably the only 13-year-old within the top 23 times in the age group this season.
Her swim launched her up the national rankings, as she jumped from 28th to 4th on the list of top times this season and is now tied at 36th on the all-time top 100 for the 13-14 age group.
D’Amico also secured her second-ever summer Junior Nationals cut thanks to her performance in the 100 breast, shortly after picking one up in the 200 breast on day 1.
Several other swimmers turned in noteworthy performances over the course of the day’s races. The 100 back saw Empire KC’s Lucy Velte and Seahawks Swim Club’s Alyssa Albertyn pick up new Juniors cuts; Velte was the runner-up in 53.93, knocking almost two seconds off of her previous lifetime best, while Albertyn took 3rd in a lifetime best time of 54.71.
Sydney Schoeck of CSP Tideriders and McKenzie Vasquez of Razorback Aquatic Club enjoyed tremendous performances in the 500 free. Schoeck won the event in 4:43.10, racing into the wall over 6 seconds ahead of the runner-up and lowering her lifetime best by over 6 seconds overall as well. Vasquez threw down a time of 4:49.76 to take 2nd, which was over 3 seconds faster than her performance in prelims and knocked 7.2 off of her previous personal best prior to this meet.
On the boys’ side, Sooner Swim Club’s JD Thumann continued to rack up the gold as he won two more events on Saturday. Thumann prevailed in the 100 back in 47.81, shaving .17 off of his best time, and in the 200 fly in 1:46.23, knocking 1.11 off of his lifetime best. His victory in the 200 fly completed a sweep of the butterfly events for him after winning the 100 on Friday.
River City Aquatics’ Phineas Theall was the runner-up in the 200 fly, posting a time of 1:47.87 to mark a massive drop from his lifetime best. The 17-year-old came into the meet as the #20 seed with a time of 1:56.70 from late January, only to knock almost 9 seconds off of his time over the course of the day.
Theall’s performance also landed him his first summer Junior Nationals cut.
