Leon Marchand will chase Phelps’ World Record in the 400 IM later this year, but tonight he settled for a Pro Swim Series record in the 200 IM. Marchand swam a 1:55.68 to win the 200 IM at the 2023 Pro Swim Series – Westmont, taking out the Pro Swim Series record of 1:56.32 that Michael Phelps set in 2012.
Split Comparison
Marchand – 2023 | Phelps – 2012 | |
50 | 25.14 | 25.02 |
100 | 54.62 (29.48) | 54.23 (29.21) |
150 | 1:27.03 (32.41) | 1:28.41 (34.18) |
200 | 1:55.68 (28.65) | 1:56.32 (27.91) |
Marchand brought the mark under 1:56 with this swim, out-touching Shaine Casas‘ 1:56.06 for the silver medal and Chase Kalisz‘s 1:58.78 for the bronze. Not only was this swim the fastest at the meet, but it was also the first 200 IM under 1:56 this season. Marchand has now overtaken the top spot in the worldwide rankings this season. Casas’ time got him into the #2 position, ahead of Chase Kalisz‘s 1:56.52 from December 2022.
2022-2023 LCM Men 200 IM
Marchand
1:54.82
2 | Wang Shun | CHN | 1:55.55 | 05/01 |
3 | Duncan Scott | GBR | 1:55.95 | 07/27 |
4 | Shaine Casas | USA | 1:56.06 | 04/15 |
5 | Tom Dean | GBR | 1:56.07 | 07/27 |
Marchand’s best time in this event is slightly faster than his swim in Wesmont at a 1:55.22 from the 2022 World Championships. His swim from 2022 made Marchand the 6th-fastest man in history and got him within 1.22 seconds of Ryan Lochte’s 1:54.00 world record.
After a triple-medal performance at the 2022 World Championships and a triple-gold performance at the 2023 NCAA Championships, Marchand is currently one of the top swimmers in the world right now. He had a major breakthrough last summer when he hit a 4:04.28 400 IM to become the 2nd-fastest man in history and get within a second of Phelps’ 4:03.84 world record from 2008.
Marchand will head into the 2023 World Championships as the reigning champ in both IMs and all eyes will be on Phelps’ 400 IM world record. Marchand swam the 400 IM at this meet in Westmont, hitting a 4:07.80 to become the top man worldwide this season.
By September in the 200 IM PBs
Leon Marchand – 1:53.84
Shaine Casas – 1:54.32
I truly don’t know if there has ever been a better underwater swimmer. Rewatch how Lochte and Phelps (two of the underwater GOATs) swam this race and you really see how Leon is weaponizing underwaters at a new level
MA stands 0% chance in this race in paris
Will he even qualify?
Phelps swam 1:56:32 in april 2012 and then swam 1:54:27 at the London Olympics four months later. If Marchand improves his time by 2 seconds, he will break the WR. He definitely can do it.
I won’t be surprised if both Marchand and Casas go under 1’54”. Who will get the WR? The answer in July. To be continued…
Shaine going 1:56.0 in April is every bit the story that Leon going 1:55.6 in April is.
Yes great time from Casas too. US trials between Casas, Foster, Kalisz and Andrew will be epic. And the battle with Marchand, Dean, Seto and co at World’s will be incredible. Maybe the most exciting race with female 400 free.
We can’t stop him, we can only hope to contain him.
holy smokes
Is Chase going to even be relevant in Paris? Either IM.
he’ll be 30 by thenso it wouldn’t be a huge surprise
Unlikely
LAST year he went 4,07 in the 400im for bronze. Show just a little respect. The older you get the hardest it is to swim fast all the time. He will be ok for trials
