Both the Ukrainian Senior and Junior National Championships were held in Kharkiv from April 23rd-26th.
Two of the most impressive performances came from Dmitry Prozhoha and Andriy Khloptsov who both set new junior national records. The 17 year old Prozhoha took the junior men’s 100 butterfly in a time of 54.15 breaking his own record of 54.24 which he set in the preliminaries.
Prozhoha’s time puts him in the second place position in the 17-18 year old Euorpean rankings.
Khloptsov matched Prozhoha’s feat by breaking the junior men’s 100 backstroke record twice in one day. The 15 year old qualified for the finals posting a time of 56.94 and went on to win the event finishing in a time of 56.22. Khloptsov also took the gold in the junior men’s 50 backstroke posting a lifetime best time of 26.08.
Khloptsov takes over the top spot in the 15-16 year old European rankings in the 100 backstroke, beating the time of 56.89 put up by Nikolaos Sofiandis earlier this year. His time in the 50 backstroke beat his season’s best of 26.54 which was the previous top ranked time in the 15-16 year old European rankings.
Daryna Zevina took three individual events at the competition, the women’s 50 butterfly (27.53), 100 backstroke (1:00.15) and 200 backstroke (2:10.37). Zevina’s time in the 100 puts her ninth in the world rankings.
Andriy Govorov took the 50 butterfly in a time of 23.68, finishing two one-hundredths of a second outside of the world’s top 10. He also won the men’s 50 freestyle posting a time of 22.53.
