Kansas Women Register 10 First Place Finishes at Sunflower Showdown

TOPEKA, Kan. – Kansas swimming made their presence known on Friday at the first-ever Sunflower Showdown at the Capitol Federal Natatorium finishing the event with 10 first-place finishes.

The Jayhawks started the afternoon strong, winning the first event of their 2019-20 season. The relay team of junior Manon Manning, sophomore Kate Steward, senior Elizabeth Amato-Hanner and senior Carly Straight topped the 200-yard medley relay leaderboard with a time of 1:44.34. That was just the beginning for KU’s strong outing.

Senior Jenny Nusbaum, Steward, Straight and Amato-Hanner each finished the day with two individual first-place finishes leading the way for Kansas.

“Today was a very good start to the season,” head coach Clark Campbell said. “The team has been training hard so you’re never too sure how it will affect race performances. They all did well in at least one if not all four. We are very encouraged by our start.”

Key Races

  • Junior Manon Manning, sophomore Kate Steward, senior Elizabeth Amato-Hanner and senior Carly Straight claimed first in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:44.34.
  • Senior Jenny Nusbaum took home first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.06) and the 500-yard freestyle (4:59.45).
  • Steward finished as the top individual swimmer in the 200-yard IM (2:05.89) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.13).
  • Straight won the 50-yard freestyle (24.10) and the 100-yard freestyle (52.84) individual events.
  • Amato-Hanner finished atop the results list in the 100-yard butterfly (55.98) and the 100-yard backstroke (55.66).
  • Nusbaum, Straight, Manning and junior Lauryn Parrish claimed first in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:35.51.

Next Up

KU’s next competition will be the Kansas Double Dual meet where the team will square off against Missouri State and South Dakota. The meet is set to take place on October 11 and 12 at Robinson Natatorium. The meet is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. on the 11th and 10 a.m. on the 12th.
