Joshua Matheny Hits 15-16 National Age Group Record in 200 Breast

Sixteen-year-old Joshua Matheny took down a four-year-old national age group record in the 200 breast Thursday night at the 2019 U.S. National Championships.

Matheny, who represents PEAQ, split 29.69/33.16/33.97/34.20 en route to his record 2:11.02 final time. Reece Whitley, who won the national title in the event this year, held the previous record at 2:11.30 from August 2015. Whitley’s splits for that swim were 30.33/33.20/33.71/34.06; Matheny cut time significant out of the front half of the race but brought it home slower than Whitley.

Matheny had gone a best time in prelims Thursday morning at 2:11.43. His best time before that was from almost exactly a year ago, when he went 2:12.69 at Junior Nationals.

Matheny took third overall in the event Thursday behind Whitley – who broke 2:10 for the first time with the 2:09.69 win – and Daniel Roy, who was 2:10.01. The podium was comprised of the top three 15-16 performers in history.

Matheny is also entered in the 100 breast – in which he holds a best time of 1:01.06 and is the third-fastest swimmer in history in his age group – later in the meet.
