Johns Hopkins defeated Franklin & Marshall this weekend on both the men’s and women’s sides. They finished with with a 156-101 to claim the women’s meet. The men earned a 173-84 victory.
Johns Hopkins:
Men-
LANCASTER, PA – The Johns Hopkins men’s swim team won 11 of the first 12 events en route to a 173-84 win over host Franklin & Marshall Friday night. The Blue Jays improve to 3-0-1 on the season while the Diplomats fall to 0-3. SophomoreJan Hagemeister and freshman Erik Bostrom each won two events to lead Hopkins on the night.
The Blue Jays opened the meet by sweeping the top three spots in the 600 Medley Relay. The team of freshman Darren Loh, junior Evan Holder, sophomores Mark Wilson and Kyle Otazu grabbed the win with a time of 5:32.21. Taking second place were Hagemeister, sophomore Colburn Yu, Bostrom and sophomore Michael Ashmead in 5:44.75. Rounding out the sweep were junior Patrick Flynn, freshman Peter Lazorchak, senior Billy Gravley and freshman John Chu in 5:51.33.
Bostrom and junior Josh Hughes then went one-two in the 1000 Free, adding 13 points to the Blue Jays’ score. Bostrom earned the win as he touched in 9:53.15 while Hughes followed in 0:08.48. The Blue Jays did one better in the next two events, sweeping first through third in the 200 Free and 50 Back. Sophomore Davis Knox grabbed the top spot in the 200 Free as he clocked in at 1:46.57. Sophomore Luke Johnson finished in 1:48.26 for second and senior Mickey McGoldricktouched in 1:53.25. Hagemeister earned the win in the 50 Back, edging out freshman Emile Kuyl by two-hundredths of a second to win in 24.90. Senior Alex Lambert then took third place in 25.86.
Yu grabbed first place in the 50 Breast, finishing in 28.09, while freshman Jonah Giuliano took third in 29.47. Otazu followed with a win in the 100 Fly, leading a contingent of Blue Jays that took the top three spots. He touched in 52.17, followed by freshman Michael Wohl (53.83) and sophomore Austin Wilson (54.72). Chu then placed second in the 50 Free in 22.65, beating out Knox, who finished in 22.72 for third. Hopkins then swept first through fourth in the 100 Free, led by Ashmead with a winning time of 47.50. Chu finished in 48.46, trailed by Johnson (48.83) and Wohl (48.97).
The Blue Jays turned the same trick in the 100 Back with sophomore Andrew Gibson leading the charge. He touched in 53.85, to beat Hagemeister by three-hundredths of a second. Flynn finished in third (55.46) and sophomore Ronan Corgelfinished in fourth (56.22). Mark Wilson then won the 100 Breast with a time of 59.84. Lazorchak followed in second (1:00.35) and Yu took third (1:01.42). The Blue Jays followed with a sweep of first through fourth in the 500 Free. Bostrom led the way with his second win of the night, clocking in at 4:46.57. Hughes touched in 4:53.28 to beat out Gravley (4:53.93) for third. McGoldrick then took fourth in 4:54.32. In the final event before swimming exhibitions, Hagemeister earned his second win with a time of 24.65 in the 50 Fly, beating Wohl by five-hundredths of a second.
Hopkins is idle until the first week of December when the Blue Jays travel to Gambier, OH for Kenyon’s annual Total Performance Invitational December 3-5.
Women-
LANCASTER, PA – The Johns Hopkins women’s swim team won 10 of the first 12 events in a 156-101 win over host Franklin & Marshall Friday night. The Blue Jays remain unbeaten on the season, improving to 4-0 while the Diplomats suffer their first loss of the season (3-1). Sophomores Kaitlin Jones, Gwynnie LaMastra and Anna Wisniewski each won two events to lead the Blue Jays.
Hopkins opened the night with first and second-place finishes in the 600 Medley Relay. Wisniewski, Jones, junior Abby Brown and freshman Emily Cheng won the event with a time of 6:16.85. Taking second place were junior Shirley Chan, LaMastra, sophomore Courtney Cowan and junior Lindsay Kriz with a time of 6:24.54. Junior Kristen Kaiser then placed second in the 1000 Free as she finished in 10:58.92, while freshman Rabia Syed finished in fourth (11:06.04).
Cowan grabbed a win in the 200 Free, touching in 1:58.52 and winning by more than four seconds. Sophomore Sara Wujciak followed in third place in 2:03.06. Chan and sophomore Michelle Kim then tied for the win in the 50 Back as they each touched in 28.61. LaMastra picked up her first win of the night, beating the field in the 50 Breast with a time of 30.56. Freshman Phi Nguyen placed third with a time of 33.38. Jones followed with a win in the 100 Fly (59.20) and freshmanEmily Cheng took second (59.48).
Sophomores Lena Bless and Lena DiPrizito then went one-two in the 50 Free. Bless earned the win in 25.56 and DiPrizito followed in 26.39. Jones earned her second win, clocking in at 53.74 in the 100 Free, while Bless finished in 55.98 for second place. Wisniewski grabbed the win in the 100 Back with a time of 59.92 and Kim took third (1:04.35). LaMastra followed with her second win, taking the top spot in the 100 Breast in 1:05.85. Wujciak followed in second with a time 1:11.14.
Cowan led a group of Blue Jays that finished in second through fourth in the 500 Free. Cowan clocked in at 5:10.44 for second, trailed by Kaiser (5:24.95) and Syed (5:30.08). The Blue Jays then swept first through fourth in the 50 Fly in the final event before exhibitions. Wisniewski grabbed the win in 26.02, while Brown placed second in 26.53, Chan placed third (26.71) and freshman Elizabeth Duncan placed fourth (28.57).

Franklin & Marshall:
Men-
LANCASTER, Pa. – Two individual victories from Daniel Sanders were not enough as Franklin & Marshall fell to Johns Hopkins 173-84 on Friday night in men’s swimming. With the loss F&M fell to 0-3 and 0-2 in the Centennial Conference (CC).
Sanders, a freshman, continued to be a bright spot for the Diplomats, taking top points in two events on the night. In the 50-yard freestyle, Sanders finished first with a time of 21.87 while his time of 56.37 in the 100-yard IM was also good for nine points.
The 100-yard IM also saw Diplomats take second and third, with Ryan Caffrey finishing in 56.38 and Eric Lang clocking a time of 57.29.
Lang also claimed a second-place finish, turning in a time of 28.22 in the 50-yard breaststroke to finish as runner-up.
Patrick Greaney and Richard Perry each contributed third-place finishes for F&M. Greaney finished the 1000-yard freestyle in 10:32.54, while Perry took bronze in the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 24.75.
The Diplomats return to action on Friday, hosting day one of the F&M Invitational at the Kunkel Aquatic Center. That event will begin at 6:30 p.m.
Women-
LANCASTER, Pa. – Despite getting two victories from junior Becca Meyers, Franklin & Marshall was defeated 156-101 by Johns Hopkins on Friday night in non-conference women’s swimming action. The loss is the first of the Diplomats’ season, with their overall record now standing at 3-1 while retaining an unblemished 3-0 record in the Centennial Conference (CC).
Before the meet, President Dan Porterfield and Director of Athletics and Recreation Patricia S. W. Epps joined Meyers and her family to celebrate a fantastic summer of paralympic competition that culminated in the junior receiving the ESPY for Best Female Athlete with a Disability.
Once the swimming began, Meyers continued to stand in the spotlight. She opened her evening with a dominant performance in the 1000-yard freestyle, running away from the field to win with a time 10:34.57. Her dominance continued in the 500-yard freestyle, which she won in 5:06.80.
Also collecting a first-place finish on the night was Melissa Mullin, who took the 100-yard IM in 1:03.73. Teammate Courtney Collins followed her, taking second in 1:06.42. Mullin continued her success in the 50-yard breaststroke, claiming second with a time of 32.38.
Anna Hess and Breann Cavanagh contributed second-place finishes as well, with Hess finishing the 100-yard backstroke in 1:02.67 to take runner-up honors while Cavanagh did so with a time of 2:02.56 in the 200-yard freestyle.
Mullin, Hess, Grace Pereles, Kellen McDonald, Alyson Campbell, Jillian Albus, and Erin Smith earned third-place finishes as well.
The Diplomats took first and second place in the 600-yard freestyle to close out the night in style.
F&M returns to the pool on Friday for day one of competition in the F&M Invitational. That event is set to begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Kunkel Aquatic Center.
