 TSA Head Coach Position

Topeka Swim Association (TSA) is seeking an experienced full-time Head Coach for a growing competitive swim program in Topeka, Kansas.  A successful candidate for this position should be a dynamic and inspiring leader, who is passionate about swimming, and capable of motivating and guiding our swimmers to reach their goals and potential, creating a unified and engaged coaching staff, and promoting open communications within our organization and our parent community.

TSA is a USAS year-round competitive swim team program which offers superior professional coaching and technique instruction for all ages and abilities. The goal of our team is to provide every member with an opportunity to improve their swimming skills and achieve success at their level of ability, from novice to international competitor. TSA also incorporates an active swim school and master’s programs. Practices and hosted meets are held at the Capital Federal Natatorium, one of the premier swimming facilities in the Midwest.  The Natatorium features a 50-meter pool with a removable bulkhead and a separate 4-lane warm-up pool.  Additional details are available at http://www.hummersportspark.com/facilities/swimming.  TSA regularly hosts the LSC Championship and Central Zone 14 & U Age Group Championship meets.

TSA’s Head Coach is responsible for all levels of our swimming program and shall represent TSA both on-deck and at all governing body meetings.  This includes assigning swimmers to the appropriate practice groups, coaching the highest level(s) of the program, providing feedback to our swimmers and parents, assisting those seeking information regarding college swim programs, and taking an active role in retaining and recruiting swimmers.  Our Head Coach also oversees the hiring, supervision and assignment of duties to the assistant coaches.  In addition, our Head Coach attends all monthly Board meetings providing a coaching update as well as preparing the annual proposed budget.   In the swim community, our Head Coach is responsible for fostering and maintaining relationships affiliated with TSA and assuming an active role within Missouri Valley Swimming.

This position is immediately available.  Prior experience as a Head Coach or Age Group Head Coach is required.  Would prefer a level II or higher equivalent coach.  The salary is $60,000, with health insurance benefits covered for the Head Coach as well as retirement benefits.  A two-year contract will be offered.

Head Coach – Topeka Swim Association

                Swim program responsibilities

The head coach of the Topeka Swim Association will:

  1. Be responsible for all levels of the swimming program.
  2. Assume primary coaching responsibility for the highest level(s) of the swim program.
  3. Assign and supervise duties to assistant coaches for other levels of workout groups.
  4. Assign swimmers to workout groups and design division of the swimmers to workout groups as is appropriate to the swimmers’ development, the financial resources of TSA and adequate pool and workout time availability.
  5. Set the team meet schedule and assure that there is a coach on deck at each swim meet.  It is assumed that the head coach will attend the highest-level meet available if there is a conflict.

              Relationship with assistant coaches and other support staff

The head coach of the Topeka Swim Association will:

  1. Oversee the hiring, supervising, and managing the employees of the Topeka Swim Association.
  2. Chair the search committee for any assistant coaches and/or support staff.
  3. Ensure that all USA Swimming requirements are followed in the hiring process.
  4. Meet regularly with the assistant coaches and with other employees of TSA.
  5. Provide written evaluations and make salary and other recommendations to the board of directors regarding all other employees of TSA.
  6. Allocate continuing education funds and make recommendations for continuing education for any assistant coaches from the annual continuing education budget.
  7. Handle meet entries or assign and supervise meet entries.
  8. Have authority to dismiss a swimmer from any practice or meet, or if necessary to dismiss the swimmer from the team, due to inappropriate behavior.
  9. Give appropriate feedback to swimmers and their families regarding the progress the swimmer is making and areas of needed improvement.
  10. Be responsible for parent education.
  11. Follow all TSA established policies and procedures.  Make recommendations to the Board for changes in policies and procedures as needed.

              Relationship with the governing board

The head coach of the Topeka Swim Association will:

  1. Attend all board meetings, retreats and other board functions.
  2. Provide reports to the board monthly, either in written or oral form.
  3. Provide written reports to the board summarizing the accomplishments and areas in need of improvement for the entire swim program in April and September of each year.  Written reports should provide a comprehensive program plan, including methods for recruitment and retention of athletes.
  4. Serve as a member of each board committee when requested.
  5. Be involved in fundraising of the Topeka Swim Association as appropriate to the specific fundraising event.
  6. Have regular meetings with the president of the board of directors.
  7. Prepare a proposed budget to submit to the TSA Finance Committee.  Actively participate in Finance Committee meetings to revise the proposed budget in advance of presenting it to the entire TSA Board for revisions and approval.
  8. Work with the Board to develop volunteers for running team hosted meets.

             Other administrative duties

The head coach of the Topeka Swim Association will:

  1. Maintain and foster relationships with the agencies affiliated with the Topeka Swim Association, including but not necessarily limited to the City of Topeka Department of Parks and Recreation and USD 501 staff and administration.
  2. Be mindful of the necessity for adequate pool time and maintain relationships with facilities and facility directors where pool time is available to the extent possible.
  3. Assume a leadership position within Missouri Valley Swimming, Inc.
  4. Attend meetings of the LSC.
  5. Be responsible for, or delegate responsibility, for distribution of meet information, posting of meet results, team travel, team records, team electronic updates, team website and team roster.
  6. Be responsible for retention and recruitment of swimmers and make regular reports to the board regarding swimmer recruitment.
  7. Assist high school swimmers in seeking information regarding college swim programs, including writing letters of recommendation if requested.
  8. Be responsible for, or delegate responsibility for, equipment necessary to the swim program.
  9. Assure that, or delegate that, TSA hosted meets have appropriate events offered and that Missouri Valley Swimming regulations are followed in the announcement, conduct and reporting of hosted meets.
  10. Enhance public relations functions of the TSA program and coordinate media relation efforts.
  11. Make sure all swimmers are compliant with USA Swimming regulations.
