INDIANAPOLIS – IUPUI’s Logan Kelly and Oakland’s Susan LaGrand earned the 2023 #HLSD Athletes of the Year honors, voted on by the League’s head swimming and diving coaches.
Logan Kelly, an Austin, Minnesota native, has been a top breaststroke performer in the Horizon League all season. Earlier this month, Kelly became the first Jaguar in program history to represent IUPUI in the NCAA Swimming Championships. The sophomore qualified for the 200 breast, after he took home the gold at the Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championships in February. He touched the wall in record time (1:52.86) as well. The two-time #HLSD Swimmer of the Week had a record-breaking season for the Jaguars.
Susan LaGrand rounded out her final season at Oakland in style. She posted the fastest mid-major time in the country for the 100 IM (55.57) and has broken multiple school records as well. This year marks the third consecutive year the Grand Rapids, Michigan native has represented Oakland in the NCAA Championships, another program-best. She qualified in the 200 IM, 100 back, and 200 back this season. During the #HLSD Championships, she captured seven first-place finishes and was crowed Co-Swimmer of the Meet. LaGrand has established herself as one of the League’s top contenders in her five-year career.
Kelly’s performance this season led the Jaguars to a runner-up finish at the #HLSD Championships in February while LaGrand helped lead the Golden Grizzlies to their tenth consecutive League title.
