The IUPUI men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams closed out the regular season schedule with a split in their respective pairs of dual-meets this past weekend (Jan. 20-21). The men’s team defeated Wabash Friday before falling to Notre Dame Saturday, while the women finished Saturday with a defeat of Indiana State but a loss to Notre Dame.
Friday saw the men’s team put up a dominant showing in a drubbing of Wabash, as IUPUI came out with a 153-83 victory. The Jags took first-place in nine swimming events and swept the diving with a pair of victories by Krisztian Somhegyi in the one-meter and three-meter springboard events. Somhegyi nearly broke his own three-meter record with a 387.30 score.
Lennart Kuester took home the top-time in the fastest event, launching to a 21.48 time in the 50 Free. David Sweezer paddled to a 9:52.71 time in the much longer 1000 Free, while distance champion Ben Levart showed strength in his short game as well, finishing the 200 Free in 1:43.17. Jon Stoller had a top-time of 51.88 in the 100 Fly, while newcomer Vince Partlow finished first in the 100 Free with a 46.42 showing. Josh Barajas earned first in the 100 Back (52.60), while Jackson Sandala also finished first in the 500 Free (4:39.22).
The women’s team did just enough Saturday to edge out Indiana State, with the final scores still pending. Olivia Treski beat out swimmers from both Notre Dame and Indiana State by nabbing first-place in the women’s 1000 Free with a time of 10:19.12, just 0.77 seconds faster than the next finisher. She was the only women’s swimmer to finish with a top-time in a non-exhibition event.
With the weekend over, the Jags will now turn their focus to the big event of the year, the Summit League Swimming and Diving Championships, set to be held in Indianapolis from Feb. 15-18.
