Iowa Gets In-State Commitment from State Champ Lexi Horner

The Hawkeye women will be keeping some top talent in-state next season, as Iowa state champion Lexi Horner has committed to join them next season. Horner currently trains club with Iowa Central Aquatics. She’ll be graduating from Johnston High School at the end of the school year.

At last week’s 2016 Iowa Girls State Championships, Horner was a 2-time champion, bringing home titles in the 100 breast and 200 IM with personal bests of 1:03.75 and 2:02.31 in those events respectively. She’s now a back-to-back state champion in both events, having won them at the 2015 state meet as well. In addition to her recent short course achievements, Horner also qualified to compete at last summer’s 2016 NCSA Summer Championships.

Horner’s Top Times:

  • 100 breast- 1:03.75
  • 200 breast- 2:19.64
  • 200 IM- 2:02.31
  • 400 IM- 4:33.63
  • 200 fly- 2:05.26

With her new best time in the 200 IM, Horner is within a second of what it took to score at the Big Ten Championships last season. She’s also just over a second shy of scoring range in the 100 breast. When she arrives at Iowa, she’ll help the Hawkeyes maintain some depth in their breaststroke and IM lineup after Big Ten championship finalist Emma Sougstad graduates at the end of this season.
