NEW HAVEN, CT – Led by 16 different individual event winners, including five swimmers with two wins each, the Iona College men’s and women’s swimming and diving team came away with a pair of win’s today as they squared off with Southern Connecticut State University. The Iona women increased their season mark to 6-2 with a 191-78 win and the Iona men climbed to 5-2 with a 176-93 triumph.

MEET SUMMARY

Freshman Luiza Da Silveria touched first in both the 100 and 200-yard backstroke at 1:00.72 and 2:10.39, respectively. Sophomore Samantha Whitney won the 100-free at 55.65.

On the men’s side, junior Robert Wisniewski and senior Shane Syron each claimed their first career wins. Wisniewski took the 1,000-Free at 10:01.89 and Syron won the 200-breaststroke at 2:15.87.

“Getting contributions like this really lifts the team and shows that the daily work is paying off. Luiza, Samantha, Rob and Whitney are among our most consistent workers and everyone was excited for them,” noted head coach Nick Cavataro.

Other double winners on the day included junior Kate Flynn, who won two events she rarely competes in with a pair of lifetime best efforts. Flynn touched first in the 200-free nearly 2.5 seconds better than her previous best at 1:57.05 and was .47 seconds better in the 100-butterfly at 59.06.

On the men’s side, sophomore Jackson Madonia won his first ever 200-backstroke race at 1:55.86 and also took the 100-breaststroke at 1:00.30. Classmates Aidan Holbrook and Jalen Ramjohn also picked up two wins each. Holbrook took the 50 and 200-freestyle events at 22.01 and 1:45.82, respectively. Ramjohn won the 100 and 200-butterfly with respective times of 51.60 and 1:56.27.

Other women winners included Amanda Agostino in the 200-breaststroke (2:29.37); Aly Chain in the 50-free (24.89); Isabella Nicholson in the 200-individual medley (2:14.17); Isabelle Pabon in the 200-butterfly (2:14.20); Veronica Sowinski in the 100-breaststroke (1:09.40) and Tristan Urso in the 1,000-freeestyle (10:54.68). For the men, Daniel Hadary took the 100-backstroke (54.07) and Spencer Moran won the 100-freestyle (48.26).

“This was a strong day for the team and many swimmers. We are starting to swim smarter and it showed. I was particularly pleased with the contributions today of Da Silveria and Whitney, who each picked up their first individual college wins.”

UP NEXT

The team resumes training for their final meet of the semester, the Loyola University H2Ounds Invitational in Baltimore, which features Loyola and MAAC rivals Saint Peter’s and Marist, along with Howard and VMI. The two-day meet begins on December 6 at 5:00 p.m.

  • Evan Bombery was second in the 1,000 Yard Freestyle with a time of 10:12.52.

200 YARD FREESTYLE

  • Leo Laporte finished third in the 200 Yard Freestyle with a time of 1:46.37.

100 YARD BACKSTROKE

  • John Gaudio was the Owls’ top finisher in the 100 Yard Backstroke with a time of 57.13 for fourth place.

100 YARD BREASTSTROKE

  • Chandler Tucker led the Owls in the 100 Yard Breaststroke with a time of 1:01.57 for second place.

200 YARD BUTTERFLY

  • Leo Laporter finished third overall in the 200 Yard Butterfly with a time of 1:57.61.

50 YARD FREESTYLE

  • Colby Delia led the Owls in the 50 Yard Freestyle with a second-place finish in 23.03. Bailey Peters was fourth at 23.24.

100 YARD FREESTYLE

  • Chandler Tucker once-again led Southern with a third-place finish in 48.65 in the 100 Yard Freestyle.

200 YARD BACKSTROKE

  • Scott Moore was Southern’s top finisher in the 200 Yard Backstroke, finishing in fourth place at 2:16.08.

200 YARD BREASTSTROKE

  • Chandler Tucker finished second in the 200 Yard Breastroke with a time of 2:17.02.

500 YARD FREESTYLE

  • Bryce Castellone picked up another victory after a first-place finish in the 500 Yard Freestyle with a time of 4:46.61.

100 YARD BUTTERFLY

  • Leo Laporte finished second out of six swimmers in the 100 Yard Butterfly with a time of 51.85.

200 YARD INDIVIDUAL MEDLEY

  • Bryce Castellone picked up his second victory of the dual meet with a first-place finish in the 200 Yard Individual Medley at 2:00.20.

  • Hannah Morse posted a time of 2:14.14 in the 200 Yard Backstroke to finish in second place.

  • Maddie Dean led the Owls in the 200 Yard Breaststroke event with a time of 2:37.81.

500 YARD FREESTYLE

  • Avery Fornaciari blew-away the field in the 500 Yard Freestyle with a first-place finish in 5:18.03, almost three-seconds faster than Iona’s Isabelle Pabon.
  • Faith Littleton grabbed third place with a time of 5:22.18.

100 YARD BUTTERFLY

  • Emily Waehler was fifth in the 100 Yard Butterfly with a time of 1:06.35.

200 YARD INDIVIDUAL MEDLEY

  • Maddie Dean was the Owls’ top finisher in the 200 Yard IM after finishing in second place at 2:18.19.
  • Morgan Fernald was fourth at 2:19.70.

200 YARD FREESTYLE RELAY

The relay team of Megan Garner, Tess DiDomenico, Morgan Fernald and Alina Tucker finished at 1:45.35 for the third-best time in the eight-relay field.
