Behind the strength of a combined 22 first place finishes, including sweeping all four relay events, the Iona University Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving teams rolled to a pair of wins over the visiting Monmouth University at the Hynes Center Pool.
The Iona women took ten top spots as well as winning the 200-yard Medley and Freestyle Relay races, swamping Monmouth 189-91. The Iona men took the opening 200-Medley Relay and two diving events to hold off a charge from Monmouth to take a 157-131 victory from the former Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) rival. The New Jersey school now competes in the Colonial Athletic Conference (CAA).
The Iona women, wearing their black tech suits and blue caps to recognize Men’s Health Month were led by four double individual event winners: Anabel Huffstutler, Megan Josephs, Julia Moser and Emma Todd.
Huffstutler, a sophomore, posted season best in winning the 1000-Free at 10:29.07 and the 500-Free at 5:12.52. Josephs, a graduate student, took the 200-Free at 1:54.91 and the 100-Free at 52.67. Moser, a graduate student, touched the wall first in the 100-Breaststroke at 1:05.28 and in the 50-Free at 24.93. Todd, a sophomore, won the 1 and 3-meter Springboard events.
Other Iona women taking gold included Senior co-captain Ashley Benkert, who won the 100-Butterfly at 57.17; Junior Brennyn Veit took the top spot in the 200-Individual Medley at 2:10.89.
Freshmen, Mary Grace Waring combined with Moser, Benkert and Josephs to win the 200-Medley Relay with a season best time of 1:46.09. Josephs, Benkert, Sophomore Ela Goucher, and Moser touched first in the 200-Free Relay at 1:36.52.
The Iona men picked double wins from Kieran Egan, Michael Faughnan and Dylan Riccio.
Faughnan, the defending MAAC outstanding swimmer, posted season best times in 200-Free at 1:37.80 and 500-Free at 4:27.75. Egan, a sophomore, took both the 100 and 200-Backstroke events with respective times of 49.12 and 1:48.75. Riccio, a junior, continued his strong springboard efforts with wins in the 1 and 3-meter events.
Sophomores Nick Patino and Nate Wales added wins in the 50-Free at 21.28 and 100-Free 46.93, respectively. Faughnan, Matthew Loftus, Noah Giunta and Egan combined to win the 200-Medley at 1:31.06. The 200-Free version had Egan, Wales, Patino and Faughnan posting a season best clocking of 1:23.19.
The wins bring the women’s season mark to 4-3, while the men climb to 4-2 on the year.
The two teams return to action on Saturday, November 16 when they host MAAC rival St. Peter’s University at 1:00pm.
