Terre Haute, Ind. — In conjunction with Indiana State University’s Sesquicentennial Celebration Era, the ISU Alumni Association and Sycamore Athletics will host a swimming and diving reunion event on Friday, Nov. 11 and Saturday, Nov. 12 to welcome back former athletes.
During the 1960’s and 1970’s Indiana State had a men’s swimming and diving program. These teams competed against a number of different colleges and universities including, IUPUI, Valparaiso, Eastern Illinois, Ohio State, Central Michigan, Southern Illinois, and many others.
In 1969 the men’s team had a stellar record. The Sycamores were beaten only twice during regular season. These losses came against the defending national champion Indiana University and national title contender Southern Illinois.
At this time the female athletes practiced alongside the men’s team and competed in events and championships through the AIAW. The women’s program set numerous records including two by Brenda Christ, now Brenda Lee, at the Division of Women and Girls Sports regional meet. Christ’s records were in the 100 backstroke and 100 individual medley and were a pair of national marks.
The gathering will be hosted by alumni Tim, ’69, and Bobbie, ’72, O’Neill. The schedule of events for the former swimmers and divers on Nov. 11 and 12 are as follows.
