Ilya Borodin Lowers Own Russian 200 IM Record To 1:56.75

2024 RUSSIAN SWIMMING CUP

While athletes around the world are descending upon Paris, France for the 2024 Olympic Games, Russian swimmers are racing at the Russian Swimming Cup.

Taking place July 23rd through July 28th, the Russian Swimming Cup in Yekaterinburg is an opportunity for the nation’s swimmers to showcase their talents outside of the Games where they are not allowed to compete as a nation.

Wasting no time taking advantage of the racing opportunity, 21-year-old Ilya Borodin busted out a new national record in the men’s 200m IM final this evening.

Borodin stopped the clock at 1:56.75 to get the job done for gold, handily defeating runners-up Alexey Sudarev and Mikhail Shcherbakov. Sudarev snagged silver in 1:58.34 while Shcherbakov earned bronze in 2:00.76.

As for Borodin, the multi-international medalist’s outing tonight represents his first-ever foray under the 1:57 barrier. Entering this competition, he held the Russian standard with the 1:57.30 he established at last year’s Russian Cup.

Split Comparison

Borodin’s New 1:56.75 Record, 2024 Borodin’s Former 1:57.30 Record, 2023
25.34 25.42
54.97 (29.63) 54.55 (29.13)
1:28.51 (33.54) 1:28.71 (34.16)
1:56.75 (28.24) 1:57.30 (28.59)

Comparing his performances, Borodin’s backstroke was slower this time around but he made up major ground on the back half, primarily on the breaststroke where he clocked a head-turning 33.54.

Borodin is now the 24th-fastest performer in history and 10th swiftest of the season.
