WORCESTER, Mass. – Junior Julianna Bender, sophomore Ayden Chanin and senior Katy Saladin all won two events as the Holy Cross men’s swimming and diving team finished in first place at the Worcester City Championship. The Crusaders recorded a total of 699 points on the day, placing ahead of Worcester Polytechnic Institute (550 points) and Clark (272 points).
Bender won both the 100-yard breaststroke (1:08.60) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:29.07), while Chanin came in first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:58.60) and the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:05.01). Saladin also had a strong day, winning the 100-yard backstroke (1:01.72) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:12.77).
Other event winners for Holy Cross included sophomore Katelyn Cerulli in the three-meter diving (225.45), junior Nicoletta Kalavantis in the 200-yard individual medley (2:16.73), junior Madalyn Piasecki in the 200-yard butterfly (1:00.79), freshman Ciara Scamby in the one-meter diving (214.10) and junior Anna Turner in the 500-yard freestyle (5:21.65).
The Crusaders also had three winning relay teams on the day: the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:41.18), the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:38.05) and the 400-yard medley relay (4:09.24).
Holy Cross received the Callie Taffe Trophy as the women’s team champion, while Chanin won the Cathy Desrosiers Award as the swimmer of the meet and Cerulli took home the Beth Ferraro Award as the diver of the meet.
The Crusaders will return to action on Friday, Oct. 29, when they play host to Fairfield at 5:00 p.m.

WORCESTER — The WPI men’s swimming and diving team opened the 2021-22 season in winning fashion, capturing the Worcester City Championship at home on Saturday. The Engineers have now claimed the Paul Parenteau trophy for the ninth straight time and 15 times in the last 20 championships.
WPI collected 12 individual titles at the event, including sweeping all four relays. Two Engineers took home individual awards, as senior Sidney Williams (Fairfax, VA) was a repeat selection for the Justin Ferris Men’s Swimmer of the Meet honor, and graduate student Justin Moczynski (Hingham, MA) won the Whit Griffith Men’s Diver of the Meet nod.
Williams won a pair of individual events, taking the 100-yard backstroke title in a time of 52.97 and winning the 100-yard freestyle in 47.11. He was also a part of all four winning relays for the Engineers. Moczynski made the most out of his first meet as an Engineer, sweeping the diving events. He scored a 232.85 on the three-meter board and followed it up with a 251.90 on the one-meter.
In total, WPI had 20 individual top-three finishes. Peter Fagerholm (Sandy Hook, CT) finished second for the Engineers in two events – the 200-yard individual medley (2:03.00) and the 200-yard backstroke (1:59.29), while also taking third place in the 100-yard backstroke (55.20). He was also a part of all four relay wins. John Puksta (Nashua, NH) grabbed a podium finish, taking second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:49.21) and was also a member of all four winning relay teams.
Kyle Staubi (Red Hook, NY) had two individual podium finishes and was on three of the winning relay teams. He won the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 52.23 and was third in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:00.91. Matthew Shriner (Arlington, MA) won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:53.71 and was second in the 200-yard butterfly, while also grabbing a relay win in the 400-yard freestyle.
Donald Buglino (Titusville, NJ) wrapped up the individual winners for the Engineers, taking first in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:49.03.
Other top three finishers for the Engineers were Eric Scholz (Fulton, MD), Henry Buda (Laurel, MD), Aidan Greenfield (East Northport, NY), Austin Aguirre (Santa Maria, CA), and Fraser Milligan (Middlebury, VT). Scholz was third in the 100-yard breastroke (1:02.77), Buda took third in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:35.67), and Greenfield was third in the 500-yard freestyle (4:59.97). Aguirre and Milligan finished two-three in the 200-yard breaststroke, Aguirre in 2:16.23 and Milligan in 2:16.46.
WPI is back in action on November 5, hosting Babson and Brandeis at 6:30pm.
