Gophers Leave Bison Behind in Notching First 2013-14 Win

Results – Goucher v Arcadia v Gallaudet 2013

First-place performances by Nicole Craver (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove Area) in the 200-yard freestyle, the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard breaststroke helped Goucher pick up its first victory of the season this afternoon in the von Borries Aquatics Center.

The Gophers defeated Gallaudet, 118-79, but head coach Thomas Till’s squad couldn’t pull off a second win as it bowed to Arcadia, the third team involved in today’s competition, 113-86. The Knights (2-4) came away from the event with a second win as they topped the Bison (3-5), 131-67.

Craver edged Arcadia’s Whitney Boeckel by 1.3 seconds to place first in the 200 free. Her winning time was 2:05.41.

Craver’s margin of victory in the 200 IM was more substantial as she completed the event in 2:23.73, nearly six full seconds ahead of Arcadia’s Charity Brain. The junior’s winning time in the 100 breast was1:15.98.

Goucher’s only other first-place effort in an individual event came from sophomore Sydney Patterson (Dallas, Texas/Woodrow Wilson) in the 1,000 free as she touched in 12:17.43, nearly 15 seconds ahead of teammate Marykate Malone (Gales Ferry, Conn./Ledyard), who was clocked at 12:32.16.

Patterson was also the runner-up in the 100 butterfly (1:11.05). Catherine Gepner (West Allenhurst, N.J./Ocean Twp.) placed second in the 500 free (5:57.58) for the Gophers (1-5).

In the opening event of the meet, Goucher’s entry in the 400 medley relay comprised of Kellyn Brower (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge), Malone, Gepner and Tierney Doran (Laguna Beach, Calif./Laguna Beach) took second place with its time of 4:49.45.
