North Allegheny’s Mason Gonzalez was on fire at the 2017 PIAA 3A State Championships, sweeping the individual sprint freestyles. Gonzalez was the only man to break 20 in the 50 free, clocking in at 19.99 for his first win of the day. In the 100 free, on the other hand, he was dominant, winning by nearly a second with his 43.62. Gonzalez also put up a noteworthy split on his team’s 200 medley relay, anchoring them to gold in a blistering 19.31.
USC Commit Jake Sannem, a Lasalle College Prep senior, and Conestoga’s Brendan Burns were also double event winners. Sannem threw down a personal best in the 200 free, touching in 1:34.76. He also repeated as 500 free champion with a quick 4:21.63. Burns, on the other hand, threw down a pair of 48s to win the 100 fly (48.06)/100 back (48.51) double.
On the women’s side, Pennridge’s Morgan Scott and Avon Grove’s Olivia Paoletti were the 2-time individual champions. Scott won the 200 free by nearly 3 seconds, turning in 51.81 on the way to a 1:46.77 for gold. She then blasted a 49.43 to take the 100 free title, finishing less than half a second shy of Meaghan Raab’s PIAA Record (49.01).
Paoletti’s first win came with her 1:59.20 in the 200 IM, as she outpaced Downington East’s Heather Maccausland (2:00.73). The 2 swimmers would meet for another battle, however, in the 100 breast. Paoletti got the early lead by about half a second, turning in 29.22, but Maccausland had the better back half, chasing Paoletti down the stretch. At the finish, they tied for the state title in 1:01.49.
Gateway freshman Olivia Livingston put up a highlight swim, taking down a PIAA Record in the 50 free. Livingston charged to the wall ahead of Conestoga freshman Caroline Famous, touching in 22.73 ahead of Famous’ 22.98. That took down the old record of 22.75 set by Emily Cameron in 2012.

North Allegheny also had a 9th grader Rick Mihm split 25.7 on breast and 19.9 on the 2 free relay, in addition to flat starting 1:38.3/4:29.7 in the 200/500 frees. I really hope his development goes well. When was the last time a 9th grader split sub-20?
Pretty sure it was a 25.9 but still impressive.
Olivia Paoletti is a member of Avon Grove High School. The team also won the AAA Girls team title.
