The George Washington men’s swimming and diving team tallied nine top-three finishes to open the 2016-17 season on the first day of competition of a two-day meet at Queens with Davidson. The Colonials will wrap weekend competition on Saturday morning at Davidson’s Charles A. Cannon Pool.

The Colonials trail Queens, 115-51, after the first day of competition and are close behind Davidson, 89-77.

The Colonials began the meet with a second-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay as the team of junior Gustav Hokfelt, senior Andrea Bolognesi, senior Ben Fitch and freshman Max Forstenhaeusler clocked in at 3:25.00.

Freshman Alex Cronin then took a second-place finish of his own in the 1,000 free, touching the wall in 9:41.96. In a strong collegiate debut, Cronin went on to place second in the 200 butterfly (1:56.10) just ahead of Fitch in third (1:56.67). Cronin later joined forces with sophomore Josh Monacelli, senior Bogdan Balteanu and Forstenhaeusler to take third in the 800 free relay (7:10.12).

Hokfelt and Bolognesi placed second (50.46) and third (51.88), respectively, in the 100 backstroke.

Forstenhaeusler and sophomore Alexander Auster rounded out GW’s top performances with third place finishes in the 200 free (1:43.98) and 50 free (21.45), respectively.

The Colonials return to the pool to wrap the two-day season-opening meet at Davidson at 11 a.m.
