Former Elite Swimmer Nick Walkotten named to UNCW Coaching Staff

UNCW first-year head swimming and diving coach Jason Memont announced the addition of former South Carolina All-American Nick Walkotten to his coaching staff for the 2014-15 season.

Nick is the perfect fit for my staff at UNCW,” said Memont, who enters his first season with the Seahawks.

“He competed and trained on the highest levels and has spent the last five years working for one of the best club programs in North Carolina and the country. He gives us an immediate recruiting advantage in our target area. I am very excited for Nick to start working with our talented student-athletes at UNCW.”

Walkotten, a native of Hudsonville, Michigan, comes to the Seahawk program following a four-year tenure as assistant director of competitive swimming at the YMCA of the Triangle Area.

While swimming for South Carolina, Walkotten qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 100 and 200 Butterfly. He was a second-team All-SEC honoree in 2008, becoming the first Gamecock to earn All-Sec honors since 2001.

In 2009, Walkotten earned All-America honors in the 100 and 200 Flys.

Prior to his success in the SEC and with the Gamecocks, Walkotten began his career at Indiana, where he was an All-America swimmer for the Hoosiers and set school records in the 100 and 200 Fly as well as the 400 Medley Relay.

Walkotten competed in the 2004, 2008 and 2012 USA Swimming Olympic Trials and in 2008, he represented the United States at the World Championships.
