Fordham Wraps Up Regular Season With Sweep of Wagner

Bronx, N.Y. – (February 7, 2024) – It was another historic day at the Col. Francis Messmore Aquatic Center for the Fordham swimming & diving team on Wednesday night, as the Rams wrapped up their regular season with a dual meet sweep of Wagner.

The Fordham women earned a 159-75 win over the Seahawks, completing their third consecutive undefeated dual meet season at 9-0.  They become the first Fordham team in any sport to accomplish that feat.  The Fordham men posted a 133-98 win over Wagner, marking the second straight season with an 8-1 record.

The women posted event wins in 12 of 13 events on the evening, led by Ainhoa Martin, and Mya Bokerman, who each won two events.  Martin took first in the 200 freestyle in 1:53.32 and the 100 butterfly in 56.25 seconds.  Bokerman swept the diving events, recording scores of 282.60 on the one-meter board and 279.92 on the three-meter board.

Other individual winners included Ellen Brooks in the 1000 freestyle (10:45.62), Leire Martin in the 200 individual medley (2:07.30), Jessica Zebrowski in the 100 freestyle (52.21), Jane Brown in the 100 backstroke (57.63), Emilie Korg in the 500 freestyle (5:09.59), and Emma Shaughnessy in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.09).

In the relays, L. Martin, Shaughnessy, Zebrowski, and Alison Lin won the 200 medley relay in 1:46.16, while Brown, Zoei Howard, Lin, and Zebrowski took first in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:37.77.

On the men’s side, the Rams saw eight event wins, led by Christian Taylor and Marco Petit, who each won two events.  Taylor won the 50 freestyle in 20.83 seconds and the 100 backstroke in 50.33 seconds, while Petit swept the diving events, scoring 239.55 on the one-meter board and 239.25 on the three-meter board.

The remaining wins for the Rams came from Alex Wilhelm in the 200 freestyle (1:44.36), Noah Althoff in the 200 individual medley (1:55.61), and Alexander Shah in the 100 freestyle (46.31).

The last event win for the Rams was in the men’s 200 freestyle relay with Guy GropperVitalis Onu, Althoff, and Wilhelm posting a top time of 1:25.13.

The Rams will now prepare for the 2024 Atlantic 10 Swimming & Diving Championships, which will be held February 21-24 at the Hampton Aquaplex in Hampton, Virginia.

New York, NY – The Wagner swimming & diving program completed its final regular season meet on Wednesday at Fordham. The women fell to the Rams, 159-75, while the men dropped their road matchup, 133-98.

Sophomore Ruben Van Gool paced the Seahawks with two individual victories, continuing his dominance in distance events. The Madrid, Spain, native took home first place in both the 1000-yard freestyle (9:56.66) and 500-yard freestyle (4:47.12).

Freshman Jasu Ovaskainen, fresh off of his second Northeast Conference (NEC) Swimmer of the Week nod, placed first in the 100-yard butterfly for the third time in less than a week. Ovaskainen clocked in with a time of 49.93.

Fifth year Olivia Bishop also took home a top podium spot in the 50-yard freestyle. An event in which she has dominated all season, Bishop recorded a time of 24.29.

Lastly, freshman Adrian Andres Moreno secured his first individual victory at Fordham, winning the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 58.76.

The NEC Championship awaits for the Seahawks. Day one of the five day event will commence on Tuesday, February 20.
