University of Cincinnati junior Joleigh Crye made history at last week’s Big 12 Championships, becoming the first swimmer in program history to win a Big 12 conference title.
In the final of the women’s 100 breaststroke, Crye went out fast and held off her competitors down the stretch to claim victory in a time of 58.09, edging out Houston’s Henrietta Fangli (58.12), BYU’s Mackenzie Miller (58.60) and Arizona’s Eleni Gewalt (59.00) in a razor-thin race.
The time for Crye marked a new school record, lowering the 58.24 mark she established at last year’s Big 12 Championships where she placed 3rd. She is the only swimmer in Cincinnati history to have broken 1:01 in the event.
The performance also earned her the #7 seed in the event at the Women’s NCAA Championships, which will take place on March 19-22 in Federal Way, Washington. Last season, Crye placed 13th in the event at NCAAs.

Crye was also the runner-up in the 100 fly at Big 12s in a time of 52.13, breaking the Cincinnati Record of 52.20 set by Lina Kutsko in 2020, and added a 14th-place finish in the 50 free (23.00) after setting a best time of 22.86 in the prelims.
Another breakthrough swim for Crye and the Bearcats came in the 200 medley relay, where Crye’s 25.75 breaststroke split helped propel Cincinnati to a runner-up finish in a time of 1:36.16, a new school record that puts them under the ‘A’ cut to qualify dor the NCAA Championships.
