FGCU Eagles Give GA Tech, Florida Atlantic a Thrashing

December 19, 2014, Fort Myers, FL – In a tri-team meet among Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU), Georgia Tech and Florida Atlantic University swimming and diving teams, the FGCU Eagle women came out on top, clobbering both Georgia Tech (183-44) and Florida Atlantic (160-83).

The FGCU women surged ahead in the points right off the bat, as they took the top two spots of the first event, the 200y medley relay.  The “A” team of Kira Toussaint, Evita Leter, Emma Svensson, and Beckey Derogatis nabbed first place in a time of 1:43.55, while the “B” relay of Karen Viloria, Katie Armigage, Yee Ching Wong, and Maggie Holling claimed second place in 1:47.26.

FGCU Emma Svennson would end up taking home wins in both the women’s 50y and 100y freestyle events, clocking 23.39 and 50.94, respectively.  Although her 50 free time topped the field today by over an entire second, it was a ways of off the 22.21 mark she clocked at the Georgia Tech Invite back in November.

The women’s 200y IM went to FGCU’s Ching Yee Wong (2:08.10), while her teammates cleaned up in the 100y backstroke event, making it a 1-2 finish in that event for the Eagles.  Kira Toussaint touched in 56.87 to get FGCU the win, while Karen Vilorio earned second place in 58.33.  Toussaint has already earned her NCCA “B” cut in this event, when she took 5th place in 54.49 at the Georgia Tech invite.

Florida Atlantic’s wins came in the form of junior Agi Bucz in the women’s 200y freestyle, earning the top spot in her time of 1:51.62, as well as the victory by Aneet Kovacs in the 100y butterfly, clocking a 56.19 for the win.  Both of these athletes’ times were off their bests of 1:46.54 and 55.08, respectively.  Kovacs would also go on to win the 500y freestyle event, outpacing the field with her time of 5:01.41, about ten seconds off of her fastest time thus far this season of 4:51.44, which she earned at the Georgia Tech Invite.

FGCU would end the meet in a win in the women’s 200y free relay, as the combination of Becky Derogatis, Sara Hamilton, Kristin Julien, and Kira Toussaint swam to a first place time of 1:36.75.

Next up, the FGCU Eagles host Liberty University, Campbell, and Central Connecticut State at tri-meet on January 3rd.
