EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Evansville swimming and diving teams will wrap up the fall portion of the 2021-22 schedule this weekend, as the Purple Aces will travel west to Carbondale, Illinois to take part in three-day A3 Invitational hosted by Southern Illinois beginning on Thursday and running through Saturday.

The meet will feature teams from five schools, as UE, SIU, Valparaiso, Eastern Illinois and Bellarmine are scheduled to take part in the three-day invitational.  The A3 Invite will wrap up the fall portion of the schedule for the Purple Aces, as UE will begin winter training after the mid-season invite this weekend.

“This is going to be a good gauge to see where we are as we get closer to our conference championship season,” said UE swimming and diving head coach Stuart Wilson.  “The team has done well so far this year, and I am hoping to see some great swims across the board on both teams this weekend.”

The UE men enter the mid-season meet undefeated so far in dual-meet action.  Sophomore Jackson Caudill (Mount Sterling, Ky./Montgomery County) is coming off a strong showing in UE’s match-up with Saint Louis on Saturday, as he won both the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:53.91) and 500-yard free (4:46.52).  Freshman Carlos Souto Vilas (A Coruna, Spain) also won both the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke events, and finished second in the men’s 200 IM against the Billikens.

The UE women enter the weekend at 4-1 in dual-meet action this fall.  Junior Sage Moore (Lexington, Ohio/Lexington) swept both the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke events in UE’s triangular meet against SLU and Arkansas-Little Rock on Saturday.  Fellow junior Maya Cunningham (Yakima, Wash./Eisenhower) has also helped key UE’s early-season success in both the butterfly and IM events this year.  Senior Jessie Steele (Houston, Texas/Klein) has also scored well this year in the sprint freestyle events and has keyed UE’s relay team success.

“The team is showing a lot of confidence going into the meet this weekend,” said Wilson.  “This a great opportunity for us to see where we are at, and to fix anything that we need to before we head down the stretch to conference championships.”
