Episcopal Academy’s Colleen Phelan is a Verbal Commit to Holy Cross

Fitter and Faster Swim Clinics is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Colleen Phelan, who hails from Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, has made a verbal commitment to the Patriot League’s College of Holy Cross for 2020-21. Phelan is a senior at Episcopal Academy and swims for Episcopal Academy Aquatic Club. She specializes in distance freestyle and swims the 200/500 double in high school. Phelan placed in the top-16 in both events at the Independent Schools Girls Championships last winter and was 27th and 26th in the respective events at the Eastern Interscholastic Swimming Championships at the end of her junior year season. Phelan wrapped up the 2018-19 short-course season with new best times in the 500/1000/1650 freestyles at Middle Atlantic LSC Senior Short Course Championships.

Top SCY times:

  • 1650 free – 17:58.59
  • 1000 free – 10:49.44
  • 500 free – 5:19.72

Holy Cross head coach Jeffrey Barlok is beginning his second year at the helm of the Crusaders’ swimming and diving program this season. In his first year, the men’s and women’s teams combined for 15 program records at the 2019 Patriot League Championships. Both teams moved up one spot from the 2017-18 season, with the women finishing in 8th place and the men in 9th. The Crusaders were light in distance freestyle, and since the Patriot League only scores an A final and a B final, it is more difficult for the less-deep teams to get on the board. Current senior Leah Zogby came in 17th in the 1650 free with 17:41.60. Phelan’s 17:58 would have made her Holy Cross’s second-fastest miler. Zogby led the Holy Cross contingent in the 500 free, too, placing 25th. Sophomore Hannah Cleary and junior Eve Smith also competed in the 500 at conference. It took 4:56.92 to get a second swim.
