Ellen Walshe has done it again, lowering her hours-old national record in the women’s 100m butterfly.
While competing on day one of the 2023 Irish Open Championships, 22-year-old Walshe logged a time of 57.96 to top the 1fly podium, getting under the 58-second threshold for the first time in her career.
In the heats of the event, Walshe posted a mark of 58.32 to claim the top seed. That already scored a new lifetime best, erasing the 59.32 she produced at the 2021 Irish Performance Meet.
Previous Walshe PB | Walshe Record from Heats | Walshe Record from Finals |
28.18 | 27.41 | 27.62 |
31.14 | 30.91 | 30.34 |
59.32 | 58.32 | 57.96 |
Walshe’s 57.96 time here would have rendered her the 8th-place finisher in this event at the 2022 World Championships. The University of Tennessee swimmer now ranks 10th in the world this season.

Post-race, Walshe said, ‘I wasn’t really expecting it this morning, I’ve been training IM (Individual Medley) rather than Butterfly, it’s nice to go back to an event that I kind of stepped away from for quite a while, and come back with no nerves I guess. I’m doing the 400m IM (as well as the 200m IM) and see how fast I can get in that, I had a good race in Edinburgh.’
Walshe is also set to race the 50m fly, 100m breast, 200m/400m IM and 50m back over the course of this five-day competition.
