2025 RUSSIAN SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

The 2025 Russian Swimming Championships continued today in Kazan, Russia, serving as the sole qualifying opportunity for Russians aiming to compete at the World Championships in Singapore this July. The men’s 50 freestyle final was a highlight on day four, with Egor Kornev continuing his rapid ascent.

Kornev notched 21.43 for the win, surpassing both his own world-leading time and personal best of 21.54 from Tuesday’s semifinals. In that swim, he overtook the previous 2025 quickest performance of 21.62, set just three days ago by Leonardo Deplano at the Italian National Championships.

Current World Rankings:

  1. Egor Kornev (RUS) – 21.43 (4/16)*
  2. Leonardo Deplano (ITA) – 21.62 (4/13)
  3. Jamie Jack (AUS) – 21.66 (12/17)
  4. Cameron McEvoy (AUS) – 21.70 (12/1)
  5. Ben Proud (GBR) – 21.73 (3/15)

Kornev’s time of 21.43 tonight keeps him at #2 on the all-time Russian performers list, trailing only Vladimir Morozov’s 2019 Russian record of 21.27, and just ahead of legend Aleksandr Popov, who clocked 21.67 in 2000.

For reference, 21.43 would have been fast enough to win the 2024 World Championships in Doha, where the gold medal was claimed in 21.44, and it would have earned silver at the 2023 Worlds, where 21.57 secured 2nd place.

At the recent Paris Olympics, the bronze medal was won in 21.56, as Florent Manaudou captured his fourth consecutive Olympic medal in the event.

With those benchmarks in mind, Kornev is well-positioned heading into this July’s World Championships.

Kornev is best known for his standout performance at the 2024 World Short Course Championships in Budapest, where he anchored Russia to gold and a new world record in the men’s 4×100 medley relay (3:18.68). Diving in with the lead, Kornev (45.42) held off a charge from Olympic gold medalist Jack Alexy, who posted a blistering 44.53 split for Team USA.

The rising sprinter made his long course presence known last July, becoming the 4th fastest performer in Russian history with his 21.70 clocking at the Russian Cup.

Kornev holds a personal best of 47.74 in the 100 free and is set to compete in the event later this week, with heats and semifinals scheduled for April 17th and the final on April 18th.

Of course the Russians are throwing down great times. If they don’t they get sent to the “front”.

Popov’s world record swim from 2000 still holding up as 3rd fastest by a Russian – impressive.
We are about 1 month away from that time being 25 years old.

How do you guys think the podium will look at Worlds in this event? So far McEvoy and Proud are the only ones who have put up 21 lows recently and now Kornev is knocking on the door. Can Alexy drop more time and get down to 21 low range?
