Division III NYU Rolls To Sweep of Fordham

New York University’s #3-ranked women’s swimming & diving team opened its 2024-25 season with a 176-124 victory over NCAA Division I Fordham University on Saturday, October 19, in the Bronx, NY.

NYU won 10 of the 16 events.

The Violets were led by standout NCAA Division III Swimmer of the Year Kaley McIntyre, who secured three individual victories. She kicked off her impressive day by winning the 200 freestyle in 1:53.56. McIntyre captured the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.05 and finished strong by taking first in the 100 freestyle at 53.03.

“The women dominated from the start and kept getting stronger,” said Head Coach Trevor Miele. “It was great to see our returners excel and the newcomers step up. We have more training ahead, but starting with a win over a Division I team is a great bonus.”

University Athletic Association (UAA) 400-Yard Medley Relay Champion Anna Li, also shined for NYU, winning both the 100 breaststroke (1:05.48) and the 200 breaststroke (2:23.05), while NCAA 200 Butterfly National Champion Caitlin Marshall, claimed victory in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:06.50.

Calista Lynch impressed in the 200 backstroke, clocking in at 2:04.73 for the win, and Elle Motekaitis secured first place in the 500 freestyle, finishing in 5:08.68.

The Violets’ divers also competed on Saturday. Maya Williams (258) and Meera Kasturi (255.15) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the one-meter dive. In the three-meter dive, Williams (252) took fifth place.

“We dove well top-to-bottom,” said Head Diving Coach Todd Kolean. “It’s challenging against a Division I team that’s been training longer. But, I was pleased with how solid our divers were at this point in the season.”

The Violets will return to the pool next Saturday, October 26, when they face Rowan University in Glassboro, NJ, beginning at 12:00pm.

New York University’s #5-ranked men’s swimming & diving team opened its 2024-25 season with a 183.5-114.5 victory over NCAA Division I Fordham University on Saturday, October 19, in the Bronx, NY.

NYU showcased its strength by winning 10 of the 16 events.

Freshman Evan Jue led the Violets with a standout performance, claiming victory in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:39.48.

Freshman Petar Dubovac also had a remarkable outing, winning the 200-yard butterfly in 1:54.64, while NCAA All-American senior Ajay Watanakun captured first place in the 50-yard freestyle with a swift time of 21.02.

A trio of freshmen had outstanding debuts for NYU. Youngsoo Ahn-Song dominated the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing in 58.15, Teddy McQuaid triumphed in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:52.30, and Maksym Nechydyuk excelled in both the 200-yard breaststroke (2:05.82) and the 200-yard individual medley (1:53.26).

“It was a tremendous start to the season,” said Head Coach Trevor Miele. “I have been impressed with our training so far this year. It’s awesome to see the fantastic results today with many impressive wins by freshmen and returners, coupled with a ton of depth.”

The Violets’ divers also had strong performances, with William Hopkins winning both the 1-meter dive (252.90) and the 3-meter dive (272.02).

“Our divers performed excellently across the board,” said Head Diving Coach Todd Kolean. “Facing a Division I team is challenging, especially since they’ve had over a month more of training. Will did a great job winning both events and was very close to achieving regional qualifying scores.”

The Violets return to the pool next Saturday, October 26, when they face Rowan University in Glassboro, NJ, beginning at 12:00pm.

Bronx, N.Y. – (October 19, 2024) – The Fordham swimming & diving team hosted NYU on Saturday morning at the Col. Francis B. Messmore Aquatic Center and came up on the wrong side, as the Rams were swept by the Violets, 176-124 on the women’s side and 183.5-114.5 for the men.

On the women’s side, Fordham placed first in six events, led by Mya Bokerman and Ainhoa Martin.  Bokerman took first in both diving events, scoring 274.20 on the one-meter board and 284.25 on the three-meter board, while Martin placed first in the 200 breaststroke (2:19.77) and the 200 IM (2:05.37).

Leire Martin also won the 100 backstroke in 58.25 seconds, while the 200 medley relay of L. Martin, A. Martin, Jessica Zebrowski, and Allison Kim grabbed the top spot in 1:46.89.

The Fordham men also won six events on Saturday, highlighted by wins in both relay events.  The 200 medley relay team of Daniel RibeiroNoah AlthoffChristian Taylor, and Alexander Shah posted a top time of 1:31.42, while Taylor, Vitalis Onu, Shah, and Althoff won the 400 freestyle relay in 3:04.28.

Althoff, Taylor, Ribeiro and Onu also won one individual event each.  Althoff grabbed the 200 freestyle in 1:41.35 with Taylor taking the 100 backstroke in 50.49 seconds.  Ribeiro placed first in the 100 freestyle at 46.23 seconds, while Onu registered the top time in the 100 butterfly in 51.27 seconds.

Fordham will next be in action on Saturday, November 2nd, when the Rams head to Columbia for an 11:00 AM scrimmage meet.

Fordham Diving had an outstanding performance, with the Lady Rams taking the top three spots in the 1-meter event and sweeping the top four in the 3-meter event. On the men’s side, Fordham’s only male diver secured second place on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards, competing against four divers from NYU.
