Despite being disqualified in the 100 fly at Canadian Olympic Trials, Santo Condorelli will get the chance to swim the race at the 2016 Rio Games. At Trials, Condorelli swam the fastest time overall out of the morning heats with a 52.28, but was disqualified for a non-simultaneous touch and didn’t advance to the final.
Last month at the Arena Pro Swim in Indianapolis, Condorelli blasted a 51.98 to break the Canadian Record in the 100 fly, and was not even expected to swim the event individually in Rio at that point. His previous best was a 52.41 from 2015 USA Winter Nationals in December.
That swim made him the first Canadian ever to break 52 seconds, as the previous record was a 52.28 set by Joe Bartoch in 2008. In addition to this record, Condorelli also holds the national mark in the 50 meter fly with a 23.30.
Before Condorelli was given a spot in this event, Canada wasn’t planning on sending anyone to Rio in the men’s 100 fly. With this event now on his roster, Condorelli will swim 5 races in Rio. His Olympic lineup includes the 100 fly, 50 and 100 freestyles, and the 400 free and medley relays.
Is Condorelli for sure swimming the 100 fly? or is he just eligible to swim it?
He is entered in the event. This Olympics entry list is not like some small meet entry list or even US OT where you are entered in as many events as possible and then scratch if you don’t feel like swimming.
If they are entered here, they are confirmed to swim.
Good decision, may have to
Redo the math based on results that are produced in rio. More data is better
Where is the 100 fly in relation to the 100 free? I mean will this be a warm up for his main races, or more of a ‘fun’ swim after the pressures off.
The 100 fly lines up the same as the 50 free for men, which means both are after the 100 free.
It works out well for Santo actually. Although both 50 free and 100 fly are on the same days (day 6 and 7 for finals), men50 free is the first event on the schedule, while men100 fly is the last, so there could be a 2 hours in between.
I don’t know if he is going to final in the 100 fly, but if he did, it would be big.
Santo not a factor in this event.
It is cold in winter time, but in one of those freaky days, we get some warm weather.
This is entirely false, and you should really learn about the sport of swimming. Santo went a 51.98 at a mere Arena Pro Swim meet, which would have put him 8th heading into the Semifinals in London 2012’s 100 Butterfly. Now give him the Olympic atmosphere, fully shaved, fully tapered. It’s actually hilarious how wrong you are. 51.85 was the cutoff for the Final in 2012. He’ll BLAST that.
Does this mean Darragh has to swim the fly leg on the m4x100MR? I thought we did the math a few months ago and the relay was faster with Kisil swimming free and Santo swimming fly.
If I’m not wrong, Darragh will have to swim at least in prelims. They have to use every swimmer they take to the games. If they make it through prelims then I could see them switching him out for Kisil
I believe he will also swim freestyle on the 400 medley.
Hope they have done the numbers to see if he is better of in the freestyle or fly.
