Defending MAC Champs Akron Top Toledo, Ball State

Ball State swimming & diving fell to Akron and Toledo on the road Friday. Toledo won the matchup 195-105. Akron, the defending MAC champs, came out with a 221-78 win. Toledo also fell to Akron, 180-119.

AKRON, Ohio – The Ball State women’s swimming and diving team competed in double dual action Friday evening on the road against both Toledo and host Akron. The Cardinals had a strong showing in which it claimed 15 top-five finishes, although they fell to Mid-American Conference Defending Champion Akron 221-78, and to Toledo 195-105.

Sophomore Amanda Kedzierski posted two individual, and four overall top-five finishes for the Cardinals. Kedzierski earned the highest finish for Ball State when she was second to touch the wall in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.33), which was then followed by a fifth place finish in the 200 breast (2:26.96). In addition to her individual performance, Kedzierski opened the meet with a fourth place finish in the 200 medley relay (1:48.50) when she combined with juniorsCourtney Mudd, Katie Horn and Jessica Extine. Kedzierski then rounded out the day with a third place finish in the 400 freestyle relay (3:37.37) with teammates Extine, Lauren Elston, andKimberly Scott.

In addition to two top-five relay runs, Extine found individual success in both the 50 free (24.59) and 100 free (53.76), in which she finished third and fifth, respectively.

A Noblesville, Ind. native, Horn also clocked two top-five finishes for the Cardinals when she earned a third place finish in the 200 butterfly (2:09.86), and finished fourth in the 100 fly in a 58.87 fashion.

In diving action, senior Madie Zirzow led the Cardinals when she finished fourth in both one-meter (236.65) and three-meter diving action (251.20). Prior to landing a Ball State diving high on the day on the three-meter for a third place finish (252.10), junior Quinn Bixler scored seventh on the one-meter with 218.75.

The women’s swimming and diving team will continue to power through the busy weekend on the road tomorrow, where it will take on both Buffalo and McMaster at noon in Buffalo, N.Y.

AKRON, Ohio – The Akron Zips swimming and diving team completed the sweep in its first home dual of the season over Ball State and Toledo on Friday night at the Ocasek Natatorium.

The Zips defeated the Cardinals by a score of 221-to-78 and Akron dropped Toledo with a score of 180-to-119.

The Zips started off the evening strong with a one-two finish in the 200 Medley Relay. The team of seniors Erin Seiler (Phoenixville, Pa.) and Hannah Raspopovich(Crown Point, Ind.) along with junior Luka Szynal (Lublin, Poland) and sophomoreSusan Franz (Canton, Ohio) came in first (1:43.76).

The second place squad of junior Lauara Savariau (Saint Hilaire la Palud, France), sophomore Paloma Marrero Munoz (Merida, Spain), freshmen Madison Myers (Akron, Ohio) and Ragen Engel (Springfield, Ohio) finished in 1:44.25.

Again, Akron placed in the top two spots of the 100 backstroke. Szynal led the way with a time of 55.79 for a first place finish and Savariau was close behind for second (56.02).

In the diving portion of the dual, Akron took the top three scores in the one-meter dive and the top two in the three-meter dive. Alice Hottensmith(Brunswick, Ohio) placed first in the one-meter (289.40) and in the three-meter (303.35). Paige Kelkenberg (Lockport, N.Y.) took second in each dive with a 268 (one-meter) and a 280.10 (three-meter).

Engel swam the 100 butterfly in a time 56.07 which was good for first place. Franz rounded out the top three posting a 58.06.

Myers had strong performances, placing first in the 50 freestyle (23.85) and the 500 freestyle (5:04.56) to go with her second place finish in the 200 Medley relay and a first place finish in the 400 freestyle relay (3:30.65).

On the night the Zips totaled 12 first-place finishes, six second-place and six third-place times.

The Zips return to action on Oct. 30, when they travel to Athens, Ohio to go head-to-head against Ohio University at 5:00 p.m.
