David Schlicht, who is signed with Australian swimwear brand Funky Trunks, has been selected for his first senior Australian Dolphins team after his second place finish to Thomas Fraser-Holmes in the 400m Individual Medley at the 2018 Australian National Short Course Championships. Schlicht will head to China to compete at the 2018 FINA World Short Course Championships next week with the rest of the Dolphins team.
Schlicht is no stranger to international competitions as an age grouper having competed at the 2017 World Junior Championships, but he’s the first to admit that making the senior team will be “a whole other ball game.”
The full time engineering student juggles his studies with 10 pool sessions a week averaging over 6km per session. It’s a tough regime but Schlicht takes it all in his stride, “I don’t find it all too difficult, I just try and stay on top of my work.”
Another family member who is making waves in the pool is his sister, Jemma Schlicht, who will be transferring to the University of Southern California this Spring having made big strides in her recovery from a knee injury. As the older sibling Jemma inspired David to get into racing and they are very supportive of each other.
As a kid growing up in the water and training from a young age it is a huge achievement for Schlicht to be part of the Australian Dolphins team. He described his selection as an incredible feeling having accomplished his biggest sporting goal to date and is ready to experience the atmosphere in China to round out a huge year in his swimming career.
