KENTWOOD, Mich. – The Panther swimming and diving teams hosted their first competition of the season as they welcomed Eastern Illinois and St. Ambrose to the Kentwood Aquatic Center.
The big highlights were a couple of outstanding performances by Ella Wagner and Marcel Setlak. Wagner made the NCAA B Cut in the 400 IM with a time of 4:27.93 and won the event by nearly 10 seconds. The freshman Setlak set the school record in the 200 back with a time of 1:50.58 and won the event.
Kevin Mills won the 100 yard free with a time of 46.86. Alicja Pinkowicz was also a winner in the 200 yard back with a time of 2:03.90. Angie Lorena Gomez Garcia was victorious in the 500 yard free in a time of 5:12.70. Wagner was a two-time winner in the meet in the 200 yard breast with a time of 2:23.12.
Owen Stender picked up a win in the 200 yard breast touching the wall at 2:06.14. The women’s 400 yard medley relay won the event at 3:54.11. The team consisted of Pinkowicz, Mallory Brownrigg, Wagner, and Rebecca Wallis. Julia Mizik bested the field in the 200 yard free at a time of 1:56.98. Setlak won his second event in the 200 yard free at a time of 1:43.44.
Pinkowicz collected another win in the 50 yard free with a time of 24.93. Aubrey Underwood joined the winner’s circle in the 200 yard IM with a time of 2:08.90. David Szczygiel got the best of his competitors in the 200 yard IM in a time of 1:54.86. Wagner continued her dominant meet in the 200 yard fly with a first-place finish in 2:09.01.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Eastern Illinois women’s swimming team took part in the Davenport Invite in Grand Rapids this weekend. The two-day event was a tri-meet that saw EIU compete against the hosting Davenport Panthers and the St. Ambrose Bees. The Panthers earned a few first-place finishes and won their day two dual with Saint Ambrose 109.50-92.50.
On the first day of competition, junior Autumn Grinter won the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.07.
Fellow junior Olivia Viele took second place in the 100 butterfly (59.02) and third-place in the 100 backstroke (59.19).
Senior Emma Keith earned a runner up finish with a time of 59.19 in the 100 free, while junior Izzy Glasgow finished third in the 50 free with a time of 25.04.
The EIU 200 medley relay team of Viele, Corinne Staneart, Kaylan Ottosen, and Grinter came second in the 200 medley relay (1:48.68).
On day two, Autumn Grinter picked up another first-place finish with a 53.20 time in the 100 freestyle.
Corinne Staneart recorded second-place finishes in the 200 individual medley (2:12.01) and 200 breaststroke (2:24.14).
Kaylan Ottosen clocked a time of 24.94 in the 50 freestyle, which earned her a second-place finish.
Freshman Erika Baber earned a top-three finish in the 200 backstroke with a time of 53.20, while Kennedy Darensbourg finished third in the 500 freestyle (5:34.76).
The team of Grinter, Ottosen, Glasgow, and Viele picked up the Panthers’ third event win of the weekend with a 1:38.61 time in the 200 free relay.
The Panthers will head to Louisville next week to take part in the Bellarmine Tri. The action is set to begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 21st. EIU will host their first home meet of the season on October 28th when they dual with Quincy.

St. Ambrose traveled to Kentwood, Mich., to compete in the Davenport Duals Friday and Saturday. The Bees earned several top-three finishes.
The SAU men won three individual events Friday while competing against Davenport. Benny Zarhin touched the wall in 47.44 seconds to win the 100-yard freestyle. Panagiotis Pappous came in third in 47.72 seconds. Egoitz Munoz Moreno won the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 52.65 seconds. The other Bee champion was Marat Usov, who won the 400-yard individual medley in 4:06.75.
Usov also took second in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:43.60, right ahead of Jonas Friess (4:46.79), who placed third. SAU also took second and third in the 100-yard butterfly. Mikhi Hassim was the runner-up in 50.79 seconds and Juan Gomez took third in 52.44 seconds.
Cory Werrett won silver in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.21 seconds. Friess was third in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:44.41 and Jonathan Rollwa placed third in the 1000-yard freestyle in 10:20.05.
Munoz Moreno, Sebastian Pereira, Hassim and Werrett were third in the 200-yard medley relay in 1:35.44. Hassim, Zarhin, Brett Jones and Werrett (3:07.68) were second in the 400-yard freestyle relay, and Pappous, Friess, Rollwa and Nikolai Valencia (3:12.16) took third.
Bryn Kiley earned a pair of top-three finishes for the Bee women Friday as the Bees battled both Davenport and Eastern Illinois. She was second in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:18.41 and third in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:58.47.
Grace Bobeldyk was runner-up in the 1000-yard freestyle, finishing in 10:54.58. Irene Artabe also grabbed second place in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:00.19.
Anna Gute placed third in the 100-yard freestyle in 55.14 seconds. Bridget O’Grady took third in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:07.74. Leyre Antonanzas was third in the 400-yard individual medley in 4:38.76.
The 200-yard medley relay team of Artabe, O’Grady, Antonanzas and Gute placed third in 1:50.38.
Kiley came back Saturday and won the 1650-yard freestyle in 18:15.79. Antonanzas took second in both the 500-yard freestyle (5:19.44) and the 200-yard butterfly (2:12.35).
SAU got third-place efforts from Gute in the 50-yard freestyle (25.05), O’Grady in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:26.11) and Artabe in the 200-yard individual medley (2:14.71).
Gute, Bobeldyk, Kiley and Artabe teamed for third place in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:42.93. Artabe, O’Grady, Antonanzas and Gute took third in the 400-yard medley relay in 4:00.02.
The men won three more events Saturday. Gomez claimed the 500-yard freestyle in 4:46.40. Friess won the 1650-yard freestyle in 16:48.19. Werrett won the 50-yard freestyle in 21.25 seconds as Zarhin placed third in 21.90 seconds.
Zarhin was runner-up in the 100-yard freestyle in 47.32 seconds. Friess was third in 48.04. Usov was second in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:09.15 and third in the 200-yard individual medley in 1:55.23. Gomez took third in the 200-yard butterfly in 1:57.71.
St. Ambrose also won both men’s relays Saturday. Hassim, Jones, Carter Gaber and Werrett took the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:25.45. Pappous, Zarhin, Friess and Skylar Drolema were third in 1:26.03. Munoz Moreno, Pereira, Hassim and Werrett won the 400-yard medley relay in 3:32.07. Carter Prull, Thomas Noller, Javier Santiago and Pappous (3:36.38) were second, and Gaber, Tayden Blair, Gomez and Jones (3:38.75) finished third.
SAU will return home to host Quincy Friday.
