The Big Green women’s swimming and diving team won the two-day, three-session Dartmouth Invitational by defeating UMass, 202-133, at Karl Michael Pool this weekend.
Dartmouth was highlighted by AnnClaire MacArt, who broke the pool record in the 1,650-yard freestyle (17:14.95) by a whopping 13 seconds. Greta Duckworth’s record of 17:27.68 was Dartmouth’s longest-standing pool record, set in 1998. Sam Norton tied the invite meet record in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:22.31), swimming the same time as UMass’ Meriza Werenski did in 2014.
Dartmouth started things off on Saturday morning by finishing first in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:38.59), earning 11 points. The A relay – composed of Kaitlyn McCaw, Megan Crook, Sophie Smith and Maddie Dunn – left over a second between it and UMass in second.
Molly Brickman and Melanya Zaraska finished in scoring positions in the 400-yard IM. Brickman was second (4:40.08), while Zaraska came in fourth place (4:44.61). In the 100-yard butterfly, three Dartmouth swimmers finished all in a row, earning nine points. Crook was second (58.95) and was followed by Grace Herron (59.30) and Caroline Poleway (59.73).
Dartmouth took the top two spots in the 200-yard freestyle. MacArt was first (1:54.13), while Laura Barthold followed three seconds later (1:57.55). In the 100-yard breaststroke, Norton won her first event of the day (1:05.01) and Crook touched exactly two seconds later to take second (1:07.01).
Poleway won the 100-yard backstroke (58.56) by almost a second and a half. Jessica Wang (1:00.71) and Mia Newkirk (1:00.75) were third and fourth, respectively, touching a split second apart.
Diving kicked off the final session of the meet. On the 3-meter board, all three of Dartmouth’s divers finished in a row, being led by Allison Green in fifth (227.85). Allegra Codamon was sixth (221.92) and Maggie Pionzio took seventh (221.78).
Also swimming the 1,650 alongside MacArt was Hayley Winter, who finished in second place (17:30.58). In the 200-yard backstroke, Caroline Filan took third (2:10.22) and was followed by Sarah Finlay two seconds later (2:12.61). Dunn won her second individual event of the weekend, swimming a 53.95 in the 100-yard freestyle.
Finishing after Norton in the 200 breast was Zaraska in second (2:25.53) and Crook in third (2:26.10). In the 200-yard fly, Poleway and Herron tied for first (2:08.19), each earning 6.5 points to go towards Dartmouth’s team total.
The Big Green ended the day the way they opened it: with a relay win. The 400-yard freestyle A relay – made up of Crook, MacArt, Barthold and Dunn – swam a 3:34.65, leaving almost five seconds between it and UMass in second. Dartmouth’s B relay was third (3:41.57).
Next Saturday, Dartmouth will host UConn at 1p.m.
