After breaking the championship record in the semifinals of the 100m butterfly, Daniil Pakhomov of Russia managed to do so again in order to claim gold in the final and better his time.
The Russian standout clocked a 52.28 to take 0.12 seconds off the 52.40 record that he set in semifinals and easily win the race over Brazilian Vincius Lanza. Lanza was six-tenths of a second behind him in 52.88.
Pakhomov was out fast in 24.24, turning ahead of all of his competitors and never looking back. Not only was he out first, but he had the fastest last 50 of the entire field as well, returning in 28.04 to defeat his competition.
Pakhomov is on his way to becoming a very strong asset on the Russian team. He’s just on the brink of moving his times into the senior international spectrum as was very evident by his 51.33 fly split on the mixed 4x100m medley relay just one night earlier.
The young Russian is leading his team here in Singapore, and his signature event the 100m butterfly might be one of the strongest for Russia. Pakhomov’s teammate Daniil Antipov also managed to grab a podium finish tonight, cranking out a 52.99 to touch in for third just 0.11 seconds shy of a 1-2 Russian sweep.
