Conferences Announce Weekly Swimming and Diving Award Winners

SEC FEMALE SWIMMER OF THE WEEK
Elizabeth Beisel, Florida
Sr. • North Kingstown, R.I.

Elizabeth Beisel showed world class speed to win three events versus a California squad consisting of five Olympians, four NCAA Champions and a star-studded freshman class led by four-time 2012 Olympic gold medalist Missy Franklin. The senior won the 500 freestyle in 4:45.91 and bested Franklin by over five seconds. Beisel also won the 400 IM in 4:09.54 and took home gold in the 200 free in 1:48.15. She led the Gators to a 181-109 victory over Missouri on Thursday after winning the 1000 freestyle (9:43.79) and the 100 backstroke (54.29).

SEC FEMALE DIVER OF THE WEEK
Ann-Perry Blank, Georgia
Sr. • Moultrie, Ga.

Blank won both springboards in Georgia’s win over Georgia Tech on Tuesday and the victory at LSU on Friday. She took the 1-meter with 290.03 points and the 3-meter with 343.73 points against LSU. The senior improved her NCAA Zone qualifying score and established her career-best figure on the 3-meter against the Tigers. Against Georgia Tech, she won the 1-meter with 295.27 points and the 3-meter with 339.52 points.

SEC FEMALE FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
Kara Kopcso, LSU
Mandeville, La.

Kopcso won a pair of events against Georgia and Arkansas, the only wins for an LSU swimmer, male or female, over the weekend. She took first in the 200 fly (1:59.06) versus Georgia and later won the same event versus Arkansas in 2:01.00. Kopcso also produced two third-place finishes in the 100 fly and 200 IM against the Razorbacks.

SEC MALE SWIMMER OF THE WEEK
Sean Lehane, Tennessee
So. • Naperville, Ill.

Lehane was one of two Vols to win multiple events during Tennessee’s 172-128 victory over South Carolina on Friday. He won the 200 backstroke in 1:45.51 for the eighth time in his career and was victorious in the 100 back in 48.36. Those marks rank first and second in the SEC, respectively. Lehane also took second in the 200 IM in 1:53.35 and swam the anchor leg of the 400 free relay team that won in 3:01.72.

SEC MALE DIVER OF THE WEEK
Cole Miller, South Carolina
Jr. • Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada

For the second week in a row, Miller produced big results for the Gamecocks on the springboard. He claimed the 3-meter board title vs. Tennessee with 409.28 points, his second consecutive week scoring over 400 points in that event. The junior finished second on the 1-meter board with 328.65 points.

SEC MALE FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
David Heron, Tennessee
Mission Viejo, Calif.

Heron won a pair of events in Tennessee’s dual meet victory over South Carolina. He was first in the 1000 freestyle (9:17.80) and later held off South Carolina’s Gerard Rodriguez at the end of the meet to win the 500 freestyle in 4:31.98. He was one of two Vols to win multiple events versus the Gamecocks.

Big Ten Swimmer of the Week
John Hauser, Penn State

  • Placed first in the 50-yard freestyle (20:14), 100-yard freestyle (44.39) and 400-yard freestyle relay (3:01.79) in Penn State’s dual meet against West Virginia in University Park, Pa., on Oct. 18
  • His 50-yard freestyle time was an NCAA provisional qualifying mark
  • Set the McCoy Natatorium record in the 50-yard freestyle
  • Trio of first-place finishes helped the Nittany Lions post a 153-129 victory over the Mountaineers
  • Earned his first Swimmer of the Week award

Big Ten Diver of the Week
Jamie Bissett, Purdue

  • Placed first in the one-meter (375.68) and three-meter (342.22) diving competitions against Miami (Ohio) in Oxford, Ohio on Oct. 18
  • Both dives met NCAA Zone Diving standards
  • Posted a personal-best score on the one-meter platform
  • Earned his second-career Diver of the Week honor and third Big Ten weekly plaudit

Big Ten Freshman of the Week
Daryl Turner, Minnesota

  • Placed first in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:21.98), 200-yard medley relay (1:29.94), 400-yard medley relay (3:19.81) and 400-yard freestyle relay (2:59.93), and second in the 50-yard freestyle (20.76) and 100-yard backstroke (48.83) in a dual meet against Wisconsin in Madison, Wis., from Oct. 18-19
  • Helped lead the Golden Gophers to a 220-150 win over the Badgers
  • Earned his first-career Freshman of the Week honor and second Big Ten weekly honor
  • Last Minnesota Freshman of the Week: Greg Norsten (Jane. 29, 2013)

Big Ten Swimmer of the Week
Brooklynn Snodgrass, Indiana

  • Placed first in the 100-yard backstroke (53.18), 200-yard backstroke (1:54.08) and 400-yard medley relay (3:36.43), second in the 800-yard freestyle relay (7:09.25) and 200-yard freestyle relay (1:31.94) and third in the 200-yard medley relay (1:40.74) at the SMU Classic in Dallas from Oct. 18-19
  • Her 100-yard backstroke and 200-yard backstroke times, and marks in the 400 and 800-yard medley relays were NCAA provisional qualifying marks
  • Trio of first place finishes helped guide Indiana to a second-place team finish
  • Earned her third-career Swimmer of the Week award and sixth Big Ten weekly honor

Maggie Keefer, Minnesota

  • Placed first in the one-meter (298.65) and three-meter (325.05) diving competitions against host Wisconsin from Oct. 18-19

  • Earned her 12th Diver of the Week honor

Big Ten Freshman of the Week
Gia Dalesandro, Indiana

  • Finished first in the 400-yard medley relay (3:36.43), second in the 100-yard butterfly (53.35), third in the 200-yard medley relay (1:40.74) and also competed in the 200-yard butterfly and 400-yard individual medley at the SMU Classic in Dallas from Oct. 18-19
  • Posted NCAA provisional qualifying times in the 100-yard butterfly and 400-yard medley relay
  • Helped lead Indiana to a second-place team finish
  • Earned her first Freshman of the Week honor

AAC Female Swimmer of the Week
Tanja Kylliainen, Louisville

Swimming in the first two meets of the season, Kylliainen won five individual events and added a relay win. In a season-opening win over Xavier, she won the 200 butterfly in a time of 1:58.79 and took the 200 IM in 2:02.64. She added a relay win by swimming the butterfly leg of the 200 Medley Relay in 24.69. At the SMU Classic, Kylliainen was named Swimmer of the Meet after winning three individual events and setting two meet records. Swimming in back-to-back races held just ten minutes apart, Kylliainen started with a time of 1:54.99 in the 200 butterfly, the top time in the nation so far this season. She followed that with a victory in the 200-IM, completing the race in 1:58.31 for her second meet record of the day. She concluded the meet with a 4:07.57 in the 400 IM for her third first-place finish of the day.

AAC Male Swimmer of the Week
Kameron Chastain, Louisville

Chastain won every race he entered in Louisville’s first meet of the year, a 189-70 victory. Chastain captured two individual victories, winning the 100 breaststroke with a time of 56.44 and taking the 200 breaststroke in 2:05.17. He was also part of two first-place finishing relays. He completed the breaststroke leg of the 200 medley relay in 25.13 and swam the leadoff leg of the 200 free relay in 21.29 as Louisville took first each time.

ACC Male Swimmer of the Week
Dominick Glavich, North Carolina

Glavich won three of his four butterfly races, as Carolina split dual meets with Texas, last year’s fifth-place finisher at the NCAA Championships, and TCU. Glavich had a pair of NCAA “B” qualifying times in the 200 fly, as he won that event in both meets. He posted his fastest unshaved and untapered times in both events, going 1:45.41 in the 200 fly and 48.65 in the 100 fly. Glavich also swam on both relays in each of the meets, helping lead his “B” 400 medley relay to a fourth-place finish against Texas and his “B” 400 free relay to a third-place finish against the Longhorns. Against TCU, he led his “B” 200 free relay to a third place finish and the Tar Heels’ “B” 200 medley relay to a third-place finish.

ACC Male Diver of the Week
Jack Nyquist, North Carolina

Nyquist had an excellent weekend of diving competition, as he won three of four diving events in dual meets against Texas and TCU. Against the Longhorns’ powerhouse diving program, which included 2013 NCAA first-team All-America Cory Bowersox, Nyquist finished fourth in the one-meter diving competition. Nyquist won the three-meter diving competition against the Longhorns with a score of 436.58, a score 20.10 points more than the second-place diver. He beat a pair of 2013 NCAA national qualifiers, Cory Bowersox and Will Chandler in winning the event. Nyquist also swept the diving events against TCU, winning the three-meter competition by 99.15 points and capturing the one-meter event by 43.93 points.

ACC Female Swimmer of the Week
Stephanie Peacock, North Carolina

Peacock had a terrific weekend, competing in four meets in three days, leading Carolina against Texas and TCU in dual meet competition and against a field of five other nationally prominent programs in the SMU Swimming & Diving Classic. Peacock won three of her four dual meet events on the weekend, taking the 1000-yard freestyles against both Texas and TCU, as well as the 500-yard freestyle against Texas. She also had a fourth-place finish in the 200 free against Texas, just minutes after finishing the 1000 free. In the SMU Classic, she took a second-place finish in the 500 free in a season best 4:42.55 and placed sixth in the 400 IM with a career best time of 4:15.37. Altogether, she had three NCAA “B” standards on the weekend.

ACC Female Diver of the Week
Kelsey Goodman, Florida State

Goodman was dominant on the board on Friday in Florida State’s seventh-straight victory over Florida Gulf Coast. On 1-meter, Goodman turned in one of her career best scores, with a 322.20 just before she broke the school record on 3-meter with a total of 373.05. The Moultrie, Ga., native topped senior Ariel Rittenhouse’s 2013 ACC Championship score of 369.55.

Big 12 Men’s Swimmer of the Week
Bryce Bohman, West Virginia, Sr., Moline, Ill.
Scored crucial points for the Mountaineers in their dual-meet against the Penn State Nittany Lions with a second place finish in the 200 back (1:47.93) and 100 back (48.73).

Big 12 Women’s Swimmer of the Week
Samantha Tucker, Texas
Against UNC, Tucker posted second place finishes in the 200 free (1:48.67), 50 free (23.55) and the 400 freestyle relay (led off in 51.01). Against in-state rival Texas A&M, the senior placed first in the 200 free (1:47.95), second in the 200 medley relay (23.44 anchor leg), second in the 100 free (50.44) and third in the 50 free (23.42). Tucker’s effort of 1:47.95 in the 200 free (NCAA “B” cut) ranks fifth nationally.

Big 12 Men’s Diver of the Week
Liam McLaughlin, West Virginia
McLaughlin stayed in fine form for the WVU divers last week, scoring two wins in the 1-meter (284.47) and 3-meter (324.75) against Penn State.

Big 12 Women’s Diver of the Week
Emma Ivory-Ganja, Texas
Ivory-Ganja finished second in the both the 1-meter (284.40) and the 3-meter (329.70) against North Carolina. She then helped Texas sweep the diving events at Texas A&M with her winning score of 338.40 in the 3-meter event.

MAC Women’s Swimmer of the Week

Jessie Godlewski, Eastern Michigan, Junior

Godlewski won the 200-yard butterfly event against both Northwestern University and the University of Illinois, Friday, Oct. 18.  The junior swam the event in 2:03.29, which was the top time from all MAC performers according to collegeswimming.com, and was over four seconds faster than the next swimmer in the conference.  It also ranks as the 46th fastest time nationally among Division I swimmers.  She also won the 200-yard individual medley against Illinois with a time of 2:08.46.  The time is good for second in the MAC, missing out on the top spot by only .33 seconds.  She also competed in the 200-yard medley relay, which touched in at 1:48.05 and ranks second among MAC teams.

 

MAC Men’s Swimmer of the Week

Krzysztof Gilski, Eastern Michigan, Sophomore

Gilski had a pair of first-place finishes in the butterfly events at EMU’s matchup against Big Ten Conference member Northwestern University, Friday, Oct. 18.  The sophomore swam a 50.23 in the 100-yard butterfly, which also ranked as the fastest time of any MAC swimmer according to collegeswimming.com and cracked the top-75 nationally among Division I swimmers.  In the 200-yard butterfly, Gilski once again had a top-MAC time of 1:51.79, which was over 2 seconds ahead of the next MAC competitor, and ranked 60th among national competition.
