Columbia Women Host Cornell; Pick Up Win to Remain Undefeated

The Lady Lions’ swimming and diving team (4-0) hosted Cornell University at Percy Uris Natatorium in New York on Saturday and came away with a 197-94 victory. The Lions split the diving events with the Big Red: Cornell’s Manita Herlitz-Ferguson won the three-meter with 265.87 points, while Columbia’s Alyssa Menz (266.17) won on the one-meter board.

Columbia won the 200 medley relay with the combination of Gabrielle Toback, Jennifer Shahar, Christina Ray, and Trudiann Patrick in a Uris Pool record time of 1:40.90. Cornell’s top relay consisted of Victoria Kuhn, Kim Jerome, Stephanie Ah-Quah, and Jenna Immormino.

In the 1000 free the home team took the top three spots: Lions Sidney Drill (10:11.75), Mallory McKeon, and Grace Senko came in ahead of Sarah Schlichte of Cornell. The 200 also featured a trio of Lions at the top with Tiffany Warmuth, Lily Morris, and Michi Aisawa. Cornell’ Isabelle Cecere was fourth.

Toback broke her own Uris Pool record en route to winning the 100 back in 54.24. Teammate Selena Huang was second; Cornell’s Immormino touched third. In the 100 breast, Celia Frick of Columbia beat out teammate Shahar for first place, while Jerome of Cornell was the Big Red’s top finisher in third. Kristine Ng (2:01.32), Patrick, and Aileen Smith of Columbia went 1-2-3 in the 200 fly. Jennifer Zheng was the first Cornell swimmer to the wall.

Columbia’s Ray won both the 50 and 100 free in 23.96 and 51.28, respectively. In the 50, her teammate Huang was second and Cornell’s Anna Elling, third; while in the 100 the Lions’ Maggie D’Arcy took second ahead of Huang and Elling.

The 200 back featured a strong win from Columbia’s Senko (2:02.46). Finishing together were fellow Lions Morris and Smith. Immormino of Cornell took fourth. Columbia breaststroker Frick won her second event with the 200, in a season-best 2:17.47. Ng and Emily Clifford of Columbia followed. Chandra Yueh of the Big Red came in fourth.

Corinna Bertelsen won the 500 free for the Lions in 5:00.64. Cornell’s Billy Murch Elliot and Molly Orbon were second and third. The 100 fly featured a 1-2 finish for Columbia with Michi Aisawa (56.46) and Toback. Cecere of Cornell followed in third.

Immormino and Bethany Douglas added points on the board for the Big Red with their 1-2 finish in the 200 IM. The final event featured two Cornell relay teams as the top scorers in the 400 free relay: Murch Elliot, Cari Stankaitis, Cecere, and Elling (3:35.17), and Yueh, Louisa Hoffman, Nicole Jibrine, and Ah-Quah.
