Colorado Backstroker Daric Sundeen Signs With NAIA’s Wayland Baptist

Daric Sundeen of Golden, Colorado, signed a letter of intent to swim for Wayland Baptist University beginning in the fall of 2017. Sundeen was the first class of 2021 signee for the Pioneers. He plans to major in psychology.

“I chose Wayland because the coaches are great, and I want to compete on a good swim team,” Sundeen said. “I am most excited about joining and being a part of the swim team.”

Head coach Alyson Hannan said she is excited about Sundeen joining the Pioneers as an incoming freshman, noting “He is going to make an impact from the beginning. Daric is a flyer, backstroke and freestyle. His current times have him already qualifying for nationals.”

Sundeen is a senior at Golden High School. He was named to the Colorado All-State team in the 100 back last May after finishing second (51.83) in the CHSAA 4A Boys Swim & Dive State Meet. He also finished third in the 100 fly (50.94) and was on Golden’s 200 medley (4th place) and 400 free (6th) relays. Since last May’s high school championships, at which time he went a PB in the 50 back, Sundeen has improved his times in the 100/200y back, 100/200y fly, and 100m fly.

Sundeen swims year-round for Rocky Mountain Thunder. His best SCY times are:

  • 50 back – 24.22
  • 100 back – 51.13
  • 200 back – 1:52.17
  • 100 fly – 50.93
  • 200 fly – 1:55.94
  • 200 IM – 1:56.84 (altitude-adjusted 1:55.94)

The Wayland Baptist men’s team finished sixth at the 2017 NAIA National Championships. Sundeen’s best times would have made the A finals in both the 100/200 backstrokes and the B finals in the 100/200 fly and 200 IM.
