Arizona junior Kevin Cordes is a threat to break an American Record every time he swims the 100 breaststroke, and he’ll get another shot on Friday at the Pac-12 Championships.

Nolan 1:41.4, Tandy 18.8 as records fall on night 2 of men’s Pac-12s

Dave Nolan smoked a tough 200 IM field with a 1:41.49, just a few tenths off his NCAA-winning time from last season. He’s now the fourth man in the nation under 1:42 this season in what should be a crazy event come nationals.

Race Video: 2014 Pac 12 Championships, 50 Freestyle, Tandy Wins, 18.8

Junior college transfer Brad Tandy is swimming in his first official NCAA meet, but he’s wasting no time in making his mark for Arizona. The junior went 18.80 to break the championships record, rocket to the top of the national rankings and become just the second man under 19 in the NCAA this season.

Cal rolled to a win, going 1:16.67, which sits fourth in the NCAA. Seth Stubblefield came back with another great swim in a tough double, anchoring in 18.85, the fastest split of the field.

The 200 IM has already been outrageous this season, with three men already going 1:41s in the conference round. Stanford’s Dave Nolan, the defending NCAA champ in the event, became the fourth tonight, powering away with a 1:41.49 win.

Though they have no top seeds, the Cal men do have 8 A-finalists coming out of Wednesday’s prelims – the most of the field at the 2014 Pac 12 Championships. That includes Jeremy Bagshaw, who was 2nd in prelims in the 500 free.
