Coe College Women, Illinois Tech Men Lead Liberal Arts Champs Through Day 2

ELSAH, Ill. – The Coe Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Teams completed day two of the four-day Liberal Arts Championships, hosted by Principia College. The women are leading the team field, with a total score of 222 points heading into Friday’s competition, while the men are in second place behind Illinois Tech with 207 points.

The school records for the men’s and women’s 200-meter individual medley were broken on Thursday. Sophomore Kaleb Donels took the record with a third-place finish while posting a time of 1:56.88 in the finals. Freshman Lauren Pio also earned a third-place finish with her performance in the pool, recording a time of  2:11.65. Senior Phil Cunningham also tied the Kohawk record in the men’s 50-meter freestyle, with a time of 21.66 en route to a second-place finish.

On Wednesday night, the Kohawks placed in all three events, including a first-place finish by the women’s 800-meter freestyle relay team (7:52.16) and a standout performance on the diving board by junior Abe Sala, tallying up 294.85.

Coe was terrific on Thursday, picking up 11 combined top-three finishes at the championship meet. The women’s team had another first-place finish, taking the win in the 200-meter freestyle relay and surpassing their preliminaries time by over two seconds. The men’s 200-meter freestyle relay team posted a third-place finish with a 1:26.76 time, just behind Morningside’s 1:26.15 second-place finish and surpassing the Kohawks’ 1:30.46 prelim time.

ELSAH, ILL.—The Illinois Institute of Technology men’s swimming & diving squad embarked on day two of the Liberal Arts Championship, hosted by Principia College in Elsah, Illinois on Thursday. The 400 yard medley relay team highlighted the Scarlet Hawks on day two as Samuel KastanGuanghao OuMatthew Randle, and Kanoa Sawai registered a school-record time of 3:24.53, good enough for first place. Sawai also set a school record time of 1:52.82 in the 200 yard individual medley preliminaries.

The Scarlet Hawks sit in first place out of eight teams with 292 points.

The first-place finishes continued to role for IIT as Ou, Kastan, Sawai and Van Wagener registered a 1:25.27 in the 200 yard freestyle relay.

Mark Klinchin (4:36.58) and Seth Wissenbach (4:43.12) captured the top two spots on the 500 yard freestyle podium, while Sawai (1:52.57) and Randle (1:56.36) accomplished that same feat in the 200 yard individual medley. The 50 yard freestyle resulted in a first-place time of 21.07 for Samuel Kastan.

IIT will embark on day three of the Liberal Arts Championship tomorrow, Friday, February 14 at 10:00 a.m. / 5:30 p.m.
