MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – A NESAC Championship meet record and Middlebury pool record were set in the 800 freestyle relay to kick off the 2020 NESCAC Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships hosted by the Panthers.

In the only event of the evening on Day 1 of the championship meet, the all-junior Williams squad of Casey Delano, Molly Craig, Gwyneth Maloy, and Laura Westphal combined for a time of 7:20.76 to give the Ephs their first win of the weekend. Williams broke the 800 freestyle mark (7:21.97) for the second year in a row. Delano and Westphal were also members of the Ephs’ record-breaking relay a year ago. With the first-place finish, Williams won its 26th straight relay event at the NESCAC Championships as the streak dates by five years.

Tufts and Amherst finished second and third, respectively in the event and all three teams posted NCAA B-cut times. Senior Grace Goetcheus, first-year Claire Brennan, junior Abby Claus, and sophomore Mary Hufzinger combined for a time of 7:26.17 for the Jumbos. Amherst’s team of first-years Grace Tarantola, Jess Gordon and seniors Sarah McDonald and Natalie Rumpelt posted a time of 7:26.88.
