After more than a year without a pool, one of the most important pools in California high school is back in home waters.
Clovis West High School has completed a $7.5 million renovation on its pool that was originally built in the 1970s.
“The pool was the original pool from when Clovis West was built,” head coach Adam Reid said in an interview with the Fresno Bee. “It was just the infrastructure underneath the ground and the concrete and the piping, and all that needed to be redone because it was corroding and could cause pretty bad damage on the pool deck or even sinkholes and things like that. It was time.”
The team returned to the pool two weeks ago for a dual meet against Buchanan High School, followed by hosting the Clovest West Swimming and Diving Invitational, with more than 1,000 athletes from 30 schools.
The most noticeable upgrade is a 9,572 square foot shade structure that covers the 1,300 seat grandstand.

The school hosted the 2022 California High School State Championship meet and will host the 2023 meet from May 11-13. The school is also a regular host of Sectional and Zones Championships.
Clovis West, located near Fresno in Central California, has enrollment of just over 2,000 students. The women’s team finished 60th at last year’s State Championship meet while the men’s team finished 103rd.
The schools aquatics programs have produced 52 CIF Champions and 208 All-Americans all-time.
The facility includes a full complement of diving towers in a separate diving well, a 50-meter pool, and two smaller pools (a diving pool and a multi-purpose shallow water pool).

Always great to hear about new pools or renovations. Also remember when USA Swimming thought it was a good idea to hold Summer Nationals at this pool (can’t remember if it was ’00 or ’01. We almost melted.

Figure out? It’s called tax assessments. Fresno homeowners are currently paying 11 different school bonds off in their real estate taxes. Power 5 schools don’t have that luxury

You say that like the schools I’m referring to aren’t raking in money. I’m alluding more to the fact that this highschool is deciding to renovate their pool instead of building more stands for a field, or buy the football team a new hot tub. Yes clearly it’s been a while and the renovations are overdue, but there are so many more pools that could also use some TLC
