CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati swimming and diving teams collected 20 event wins in their home opener against Miami (OH) on Saturday, Oct. 8.
The Bearcats split the dual with the RedHawks at the Keating Aquatic Center. The men’s team won in commanding fashion, 216 to 84, while the women fell just short, 166 to 134.
The Bearcats were able to sweep wins in the 400-yard medley relay, 100-yard backstroke, 100-yard breaststroke, 200-yard backstroke and 200-yard breaststroke.
Junior Hunter Gubeno and graduate student Conner Funke led the way for the men’s team that secured 13 total event wins. Both were part of the men’s 400-yard medley relay team that won in a time of 3:18.67.
Gubeno also won the 100-yard (49.65) and 200-yard backstroke (1:50.16) while Funke claimed victories in the 100-yard (55.81) and 200-yard breaststroke (55.81).
The women’s dual was close throughout the entire meet. Freshmen Grace Gavin and Joleigh Crye picked up three event wins each, including a 400-yard medley relay victory with a time of 3:49.31.
Gavin won the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:08.10 and the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 56.75. The Bearcats claimed the top four spots in the 100-yard backstroke.
For the second straight meet, Crye picked up event wins in both the 100-yard butterfly (56.47) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.88).
In the men’s 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard backstroke, the Bearcats secured the top four spots, with freshman Maksim Maskalenka earning his first event win of the season in the 200-yard freestyle (1:40.43) and Funke winning the 200-yard backstroke.
The Bearcat men also secured the top four spots in both the 100-yard and 200-yard butterfly event with junior Tommy Eaton finishing as the top performer at 49.11 in the 100-yard and 1:50.17 in the 200-yard.

The Bearcats will head over to Morgantown, West Virginia, to compete against the University of West Virginia in a two-day dual meet on Oct. 21-22.

The Miami University swimming and diving teams traveled to the University of Cincinnati for a split result finish on Saturday, Oct. 8. In their first away meet of the 2022-23 season, the women’s team came out on top with a final score of 166-134, while the men’s team fell 216-84.
How It Happened:
- Kicking off the meet with the 400 medley relay, the women’s A relay team picked up second place finish; Madeline Padavic, Emma Schueler, McKenzie Reid and Nicole Maier earned a combined time of 3:51.42. The men’s A relay team of Owen Blazer, Adrian Dulay, Diego Pareja and Jack Herczeg finished third, combining for a time of 3:25.83.
- Maier and Julia Waechter both topped the podium in two individual events. Waechter claimed wins in the 50 freestyle (24.00) and the 100 freestyle (51.78), while Maier took first in the 200 freestyle (1:50.48) and the 500 freestyle (5:00.68).
- Other top placements for the women’s team came from Erin Szczupakiewicz in the 200 butterfly (2:05.55) and Audrey Conley in the 1000 freestyle (10:31.38), with Conley also taking second in the 500 freestyle (5:07.35).
- Pedro Gueiros came out victorious in the 50 freestyle for the men, finishing with a time of 20:81. Owen Blazer also performed well, finishing second in the 100 backstroke (50.71).
- Greta Kolbeck earned three second place finishes across the meet with times of 1:50.77 in the 200 freestyle, 51.87 in the 100 freestyle and 2:08.55 in the 200 IM. Additionally taking second for the RedHawks were Honor Brodie-Foy in the 50 freestyle (24.04) and Mady Bachmeier in the 200 butterfly (2:06.21); Bachmeier also placed third in the 200 backstroke (2:05.71).
- The women’s team grabbed third with Katheryn Antonowich in the 1000 freestyle (10:39.09) and 500 freestyle (5:08.89), Emma Schueler in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.17), Maggie Patterson in the 200 butterfly (2:06.55) and 100 butterfly (57.44) and Sara Lahrach-Sanchez in the 200 breaststroke (2:24.32).
- Third place for the men’s team went to Yonatan Rosin for the 1000 freestyle (9:35.11), Adrian Dulay for the 100 breaststroke (57.23) and Herczeg for the 100 freestyle (46.10).
- Miami swimmers finished strongly in the 200 freestyle relay. The women’s A relay team took first thanks to a combined time of 1:34.82 from Maier, Waechter, Jenna Halliday and Kolbeck. For the men, the A relay team came in third, with Herczeg, Uroš Djokovic, Pedro Gueiros and Matt Fetterman combining for a time of 1:24.44.
- Miami landed divers in first across all events. Sydney Rice picked up scores of 261.00 in the 1 meter dive and 279.85 in the 3 meter dive, while Jackson Miller found scores of 307.60 in the 1 meter dive and 349.75 in the 3 meter dive. Mia Meinhardt came in second across both women’s events (1 meter, 247.75; 3 meter, 252.80), along with Victor Hearn in the 3 meter dive (298.50). David Burke landed in third for the men in the 1 meter dive (249.75).

The RedHawks will travel to IUPUI for a diving meet on Thursday, Oct. 20, with a 2 p.m. start time. Miami’s women’s team returns to action at Ohio University on Saturday, Oct. 29, while the men’s team will go up against Indiana State and Missouri State in a co-ed meet at Indiana on Friday, Nov. 4, and Saturday, Nov. 5.
