China scored its sixth gold medal out of seven total Olympic events tonight in the men’s 10m platform final, with Aisen Chen taking the gold.
Chen bested the field both in semifinals this morning and finals tonight, ending up with over 50 points on silver medalist German Sanchez of Mexico, who scored 532.70 points.
The bronze went to American David Boudia with 525.25 points, earning his second diving medal of this Olympics and Team USA’s third.
Chen performed the best individual dive of the night, a reverse 2 1/2 somersaults with 2 /12 twists with a 3.6 DD. He scored 108.00 points with five perfect 10s and two 9.5s.
Chen said that he was not expecting the 10m gold.
“Maybe for the synchronized event, yes, but not for the individual one. This one was kind of a surprise.”

This morning, Great Britain’s Tom Daley missed the final, scoring 403.25 to finish at the very bottom of the semifinal. American Steele Johnson finished just outside the top 12 with a 13th-place 447.85.
I was sad to see Daley have such a disastrous semis. His dives in the prelims were gorgeous.
The Chinese dominance continues. Happy to see great divers from other countries are challenging them. Yes Qiu has been consistent in recent years, but Chen was the consistent one in Rio. Tom Daley will return but will Boudia?
I was surprised Qiu Bo didn’t make it to the podium. His dives have been pretty consistent since London. But then Tom Daley also missed the final.
