Caribbean Swimmers take to 5K Open Water at Carifta Championships

The 2013 CARIFTA Swimming Championships were contested in Kingston Jamaica this past week and for the first time open water swimming was added to the program.   The CARIFTA swim champions, started in 1985, is modeled after the prestigious CARIFTA (Caribbean Free Trade Association) track and field championships.   The annual championship features the best youth swimmers from the region and is an integral part in the development of the sport.

Women 15-17

Girls 13-14
1st – Florence Genipa– Guadeloupe- 1:17:52.33
2nd – Shania David – Trinidad and Tobago- 1:23:27.84
3rd – Catriona Macrae – Cayman Islands – 1:24:03.97

Boys 13-14
1st – Samson Boileau– Guadeloupe- 1:13:10.44
2nd – Patrick Groters– Aruba- 1:15:28.49
3rd – Christian Marsden– Trinidad and Tobago- 1:15:48.72

The addition of open water swimming to the CARIFTA swimming championships will undoubtedly lead to increased development in the Caribbean region. There are a number of iconic open water swimming festivals held in the beautiful tropical waters including the annual Flowers Sea Swim which draws nearly 800 swimmers each year and attracts of number of Olympians and luminaries from the world of swimming.  It will be exciting to following open water swimming development throughout the region.

“The Bocas del Dragón Open Water Challenge”
