The 2013 CARIFTA Swimming Championships were contested in Kingston Jamaica this past week and for the first time open water swimming was added to the program. The CARIFTA swim champions, started in 1985, is modeled after the prestigious CARIFTA (Caribbean Free Trade Association) track and field championships. The annual championship features the best youth swimmers from the region and is an integral part in the development of the sport.

The addition of open water swimming to the CARIFTA swimming championships will undoubtedly lead to increased development in the Caribbean region. There are a number of iconic open water swimming festivals held in the beautiful tropical waters including the annual Flowers Sea Swim which draws nearly 800 swimmers each year and attracts of number of Olympians and luminaries from the world of swimming. It will be exciting to following open water swimming development throughout the region.

“The Bocas del Dragón Open Water Challenge”
Hello, my name is Ian Palmer-Nurse. I am the owner of Bocas Del Dragon Extreme Sports. We are hosting an open water race from Trinidad to Venezuela on October 26, 2014. It is seven to eleven miles depending on the course. We are looking for 100 teams or individual swimmers to pair with 100 sponsors.
