Canada’s Best Swimmers Will Race at the 2013 World Championships Trials

Canada’s best swimmers will race at the 2013 World Championships Trials from April 3 to 6 at Saanich Commonwealth Place in Victoria. The fastest will earn the right to represent the country at this summer’s FINA World Championships in Barcelona (July 19 – Aug. 4). Teams for the World University Games and European junior tour will also be nominated.

Two-time Olympic medallist Ryan Cochrane will be looking to qualify in three events at his home pool, while fellow Victorian Alec Page, the youngest male on Canada’s 2012 Olympic swimming team, is among the up-and-coming talent on display. On the women’s side, Olympic finallists Martha McCabe, Brittany MacLean and Sinead Russell will take to the pool in an effort to return to the world’s highest stage.

Swimming Canada will make every effort to accommodate media requests of all types. For media covering the event in person, please be advised of the following timelines:

Tuesday, April 2

-Media accreditations will be available at the pool

-Media day for advance stories: Cameras welcome from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., with select swimmers and coaches available for interviews between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m.

Wednesday, April 3 – Saturday, April 6

-Preliminary heats begin at 10 a.m. each day

-Finals begin at 6 p.m. each day

-Media welcome throughout the day

-Swimmers and coaches will be available for interviews with accredited media in the mixed zone. Most swimmers will be available post-race.

Canada’s elite para-swimmers will also be in action that weekend as Minneapolis, Minn., plays host to the Can-Am International Paralympic Committee World Championships Trials. That meet will serve as the qualifier for this summer’s IPC Swimming World Championships in Montreal Aug. 11 to 18.
