Brooke Schultz (Fayetteville, Ark./University of Arkansas) and Jordan Windle (Morrisville, N.C./University of Texas) came away from the fifth day of competition at the 2017 USA Diving Winter National Championships with national titles Sunday afternoon at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. Schultz earned the top spot in the women’s 3-meter event and Windle took the men’s 10-meter contest. Schultz compiled a cumulative score of 912.25 to best the women’s field and Windle crafted a collective mark of 1263.50 to lead the men. Colin Zeng (Knoxville, Tenn./University of Tennessee) scored 1283.55 in the men’s 10-meter contest, but was not eligible to medal due to his international status.
Schultz came into the women’s 3-meter final as the top seed with a score of 601.10 points after the preliminary and semifinal rounds, holding a 48.45-point lead heading into the final.
“Not matter what the margin is going into final, you know all the other girls are competitors and they’re still going for it,” Schultz said. “You have to be on your game and dive consistently to keep that lead.”
Schultz showed the consistency by scoring 54.00 or more points on each of her dives in the final, including four worth 63.00 or more points. She posted a forward 3½ somersault pike in round two that earned 66.65 points, her highest-scoring dive of the final. The Arkansas Razorback held off Maria Coburn (Round Rock, Texas/Longhorn Aquatics) who took silver with 869.05 points, and Krysta Palmer (Carson City, Nev./Nevada Dive Club) came in third with 820.95 points. All three were members of the 2017 FINA World Championships team.
Another member of that squad from Budapest took home hardware as Windle bested the men’s 10-meter field. Zeng posted the top score, but international divers are not eligible to medal at USA Diving national championships.
“It’s an amazing experience to comeback and dive for the USA and to get a national title again,” Windle stated. “I’ve been working really hard and hopefully we keep going.”
Windle constructed a final with three dives breaching the 70.00-point mark, including a back 2½ somersault 2½ twist pike worth 75.60 points in round six. The North Carolina native impressed in rounds three and four, going 72.15 (forward 4½ somersault tuck) and 72.00 (armstand back 2 somersault 1½ twist free). Max Flory (Fairfax, Va./Dominion Dive Club) finished second overall with 1063.50 points and Zach Cooper (Greenwood, Ind./University of Miami) earned bronze with 1060.75 points.
The 2017 USA Diving Winter National Championships continue through Tuesday, December 19 in Greensboro, N.C. at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. Tomorrow’s events include the men’s synchronized 3-meter preliminary and final and the women’s synchronized 10-meter preliminary and final. Competition begins at 10:00 a.m. EST.
