WASHINGTON, D.C. – (August 9, 2024) – British Swim School, the nation’s leading “learn to swim” franchise company, continues its rapid expansion across North America with the opening of its newest franchise location in the nation’s capital. Amin Raad is leading the new location, with plans to open mid-July.

Motivated by his 8-year-old daughter’s success in the British Swim School program at another nearby franchise location, Raad decided to bring the business and its mission to the D.C. metro area. Since his daughter’s first lesson, Raad has been impressed by how the program is run and how they support their swimmers.

“The level of professionalism and the emphasis on survival skills rather than just swimming attracted me to British Swim School,” said Raad. “After seeing my daughter thrive and become more confident in the water, I knew I wanted to bring this program to more families in D.C.”

For more than 40 years, British Swim School has been dedicated to teaching water survival skills by teaching infants, children, and adults of all ages the skills needed for water acclimation, water survival, and stroke development. Its mission — ensure that every person, regardless of age or ability, has the opportunity to become a safe and happy swimmer.

Across the nation, eleven people die every day from unintentional drownings, with nearly 4,000 deaths occurring each year. Research shows that participation in formal swim programs, such as those offered by British Swim School, can reduce the risk of drowning by 88% among children who are most at risk for deaths caused by drowning. However, the risk of drowning isn’t limited to children: a Red Cross survey found that more than half of all Americans (54%) either can’t swim or don’t have the basic swimming skills needed to save themselves in the event of a water emergency.

The Raads have tried several different swim programs and believe British Swim School is truly the best one. Part of British Swim School’s program is Survival Week, where students learn how to swim in their clothes and survive unexpected water emergency situations.

“This hit home for us as we’ve experienced a situation where our daughter fell into the water, fully clothed. It can happen so easily and when you least expect it, we were just walking along a creek in the city,” said Raad.

British Swim School of North Washington, D.C. will hold lessons at Edlavitch Jewish Community Center of Washington, D.C., located at 1529 16th St NW, Washington, DC 20036. Lessons will run Monday and Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Tuesday and Thursday from 4pm to 8pm Raad hopes to open three more pool locations by the end of the year.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Amin Raad to our British Swim School family,” said Ashley Gundlach, British Swim School President. “His experience sending his daughter through the program and passion to share water safety with the community will allow him to make a significant impact in the D.C. metro area. We look forward to supporting him as he brings our life-saving skills to his community.”
