FORT WORTH — TCU’s swimming and diving teams bested the University of the Incarnate Word in its third dual meet of the season. The men won, 159-135, while the women claimed a 166-134 victory.
Record Breaker
Izzy Ashdown broke two school record en route to first-place finishes on both boards. On 1-Meter, Ashdown’s 323.55 bested Kirsten Connolly’s 2016 record of 321.30. In 3-Meter, the Sydney, Australia native’s 362.17 edged Kelly Seely’s 360.15 that had stood since 2006.
NCAA Zone Cuts
Connie Deighton registered her first NCAA qualifying scores of the season on both boards. The sophomore scored a 276 on 1-Meter and 306.375 on 3-Meter. Last season against the Cardinals, Deighton had a stellar day on the boards for the Frogs, sweeping the 1- and 3- meter dives.
Ashdown’s record-breaking scores also garnered her NCAA Zone cuts.
Two’s Better Than One
Three Horned Frogs won two individual events against the Cardinals.
Noah Cumby took the 100 Free (46.20) and 200 Free (1:40.38).
Senior and team captain Claire Munster won the 50 Free (23.78) and 100 Free (51.98).
Janis Silins finished first in the 100 Breast (55.56) and 200 Breast (2:02.45).
Both Cumby and Silins also contributed to the 200 Medley Relay team that claimed first place. Munster was a part of the first place women’s 200 Medley team as well.

FORT WORTH, Texas — The University of the Incarnate Word men’s and women’s swimming and diving team wrapped up Friday night’s meet day to trail Texas Christian University 159-135 for the men and 166-134 for the women. The Cardinals earned hefty points with a handful of top finishes but ultimately trailed in points to the Horned Frogs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The relay squad of Ximena Conde, Mariana Ruvalcaba Cruz, Brenda Diaz and Hannah Rowley began the day to place first in the 800 freestyle relay with a time of 7:35.70. For the men, Fernando Ruvalcaba Cuz, Leonardo Sanchez, Alex Garrriga and Hector Ruvalcaba Cruz came in third place to go 6:58.78.
H. Ruvalcaba Cruz dominated the men’s 200 butterfly, 500 freestyle and 400 IM to finish with times of 1:48.50, 4:34.02 and 3:55.84. Younger siblings F. Ruvalcaba Cruz and M. Ruvalcaba Cruz followed suit to add respective wins in the men’s 200 backstroke (1:49.15) and women’s breaststroke (2:19.42).
Conde later bettered the split she posted in the relay earlier in the day to touch first in the 200 freestyle with a finals time of 1:50.97, also placing first in the 500 free and 400 IM with times of 5:00.48 and 4:26.12. On the men’s side, Leonardo Sanchez’s second-half comeback in the 200 free was close but not enough to out-touch TCU’s Noah Cumby, ultimately touching second with a time of 1:40.96.
Diaz struck gold again in the 1000 free to take the top spot with a 10:16.55 finish, also finishing second in the 400 IM behind teammate Conde. Sergio Duran kept with his pattern as a distance rockstar to finish first in the men’s 1000 freestyle with a time of 9:36.72. Diaz later tacked on another first place finish in the 200 fly to finish in 2:05.06.
Sophie Taylor racked up top points in the women’s 100 butterfly to touch first in a time of 56.64, while Jared Wallace touched second on the men’s side to go 50.66.
Transfer junior Kristen Straszacker went out with the fastest 50 split in the 100 backstroke, but was narrowly out-touched to place second just .04 behind with a time of 57.48. Using this as fuel to get back on top, Straszacker came out hard in the women’s 200 backstroke to finish first by .01 with a finals time of 2:04. 07. Another close decision for first in the men’s 100 backstroke landed F. Ruvalcaba Cruz second place against TCU’s speedy Joao Andrade with a time of 50.94.
M. Ruvalcaba Cruz and Oleksandr Karpenko both finished second in the women’s and men’s 100 breaststroke, with respective times of 1:03.79 and 56.45. Karpenko took second in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:03.25.
In 1M diving, Timothy Newton excelled to place first with 296.77 points, as Dawson showed out his strength in 3M diving to finish first with 369.07 points. For the women, Ana Lucia Garza was the top finisher for the Cardinals in 1M and 3M diving to place third in both events with 262.20 and 276.22 points.
Magda Vega and Christopher Lestage took the 50 freestyle sprint head-on to finish fourth and third, respectively, with times of 24.67 and 21.45. Vega later placed third in the 100 freestyle in a time of 53.77. Leonardo Sanchez took third for the men in the 100 free with a time of 46.60, where the margin between first and third place was less than half a second.
The final relays of the day ended on-trend with many of the day’s races, with the Cardinals putting up a fight down to the end with the Big-12 powerhouse. The men and women took second in the 200 medley relays, with the men (F. Ruvalcaba Cruz, Karpenko, Kuchan and Lestage) finishing in 1:33.45 while the women (Straszacker, M. Ruvalcaba Cruz, Taylor and Vega) went 1:45.33.

The men’s and women’s schedule remains aligned for their next time out scheduled to compete at the SMU Invite on Nov. 22-24.
