The Second Trophy Castagnetti will run on June 1st and 2nd in Verona and will see 750 junior athletes compete for titles at a meet that is dedicated to coach Alberto Castagnetti.
As a young coach Castagnetti had athletes compete at the 1972 Olympics and the 1973 World Championships. He became the Head Coach of Italian Swimming in 1987 and remained in that position until his death in 2009. During his tenor as National Team Head Coach the Italians collected four gold, three silver and seven bronze over six Olympic Games.
The highlights coming at the 2000 Olympics when the nation won three gold, one silver and two bronze and at the 2008 Olympics when Federica Pellegrini became the first Italian woman to win Olympic gold.
Castagnetti’s most notable swimmers were Domenico Fioravanti, who collected two gold at the 2000 Olympics, Federica Pellegrini and Giorgio Lamberti, who won a gold at the 1991 World Championships.
