Day 2 of the 2025 Women’s MAC Championships is in the books. The 2nd day of the meet saw 3-time defending champions Akron expand their lead from Wednesday night slightly, though Buffalo has risen in the ranks and aren’t far behind.
The session ended with a bang last night, seeing Akron shatter the pool record and very narrowly miss the conference record in the 400 medley relay. Maddy Gatrall led the Zips off in 52.33, then Claire Cox split 59.80 on breast, Abby Daniel put up a speedy 51.39 on the fly leg, and Adrianna Szwabinska anchored in 48.19. They combined for a 3:31.71, which blew away the Buffalo pool record, which Akron set back in 2020 at 3:35.13. The Zips also just missed their own MAC record of 3:31.67, which they set back in 2022.
They were a number of other notable swims on the relay. Ohio’s Casadie DiBetta clocked a 59.10 on the breast leg, whole Zita Szoke was 51.83 on fly, and Caroline Dunigan was 48.65 on free. Miami’s Madeline Padavic led her team off in 52.36, while Buffalo’s Mia Naccarella led her team off in 52.39.
Before helping the Akron relay to victory, Abby Daniel won the 200 IM in decisive fashion. Daniel ripped a 1:56.04, which shattered the pool record of 1:57.65, and tied the championship record, which Miami’s Nicole Maier set in 2023. Daniel already holds the conference record in the event with her career best of 1:55.54. The 200 IM was a 1-2 punch for Akron, as Rebecca Reid came in 2nd with a 1:59.08. Miami’s Kaylin Herbet was also under 2:00, coming in 3rd with a 1:59.16.
Prior to her big relay split, Ohio’s Zita Szoke tied Ball State’s Payton Kelly for 1st in the 50 free. Both women went 22.23, clipping the 12-year-old pool record by 0.01 seconds. In a funny coincidence, both Szoke and Kelly had the exact same reaction time as well, 0.73.
Akron also picked up a win in the 500 free, where Elle Couture swam a 4:50.44. Couture established the lead early, and would hold it through the race.
Buffalo stood atop the podium in 1-meter diving, where Mari Kwak won by a huge margin. Kwak ended with a score of 312.05, taking 1st by 50 points.
